Event: The Effects of Climate Change on Maple & Dairy in VT

Over the next 50 years there will be major shifts in population, climate as well as in the dairy and maple industries worldwide. Some regions are positioned to benefit strongly in food production, including Vermont where dairy and maple thrive - but local producers will need to address challenges from climatic changes too. Join us for a free evening of speakers who'll help us understand some of challenges and opportunities that these shifts will present all of us.

We're happy to host an evening to explore those challenges via “The Effects of Climate Change on Maple & Dairy in Vermont: 50 Years in the Future” at 7:00pm, Wednesday, September 20th, sponsored by the Craftsbury Land Committee. The evening's speakers include Dr. Jack Britt a scientist, teacher professor and consultant ...

Sep2017 Logging

Update: TRAIL CLOSURES

We're wrapping up logging on the south end. We have some signs and tape to move, and some stuff to clean up. As of Friday, 22 Sep

Ski Trails/Doubletrack closed for logging:

Kirby's Downhill
The Pines

Bike/Running Trails/Singletrack closed for logging:

Lower Bonus
Moo Moo Farm
RIP Tamarack
Upper Bonus

We have some cleanup to do on a number of these trails (see updated map), but many of these are pretty decent as they sit.

Read more about the forestry plan that guided this harvest below, or find information about several of our other initiatives over here. And download a marked up copy of the map with closures. Now's also an excellent time to explore the singletrack at Hosmer Point! Check out the Hosmer Point Trail Map.

Whelpley Returns to Craftsbury as GRP Coach

Craftsbury Outdoor Center is pleased to welcome back Green Racing Project alum Steve Whelpley as new Green Racing Project (GRP) Rowing Coach. Having first come to the Outdoor Center as a GRP sculler himself, Steve is uniquely suited to join us in this role, and as a member of our Sculling Management team. Steve will step into the position immediately, having just completed a summer of coaching Craftsbury’s U23 group. Before that, he served as assistant coach at Colby College, his alma mater.

Steve’s rowing career spanned many years, the last 4 of which were spent at Craftsbury. He raced as the US M1x in 2013, the US M4x in 2014, and the M2x in the 2016 Olympic Trials Last Chance regatta.

"Coming back to Craftsbury as a coach may excite me even more than when I came as an athlete,” ...

GRP Ski Team Opens the 2017 Season at New Zealand Winter Games

Most years the Green Racing Project ski team starts their winter race season at a more traditional time, right before or after Thanksgiving, when snow first hits the Northern Hemisphere. However, this year the GRP traveled south in late August to train in New Zealand at the Snow Farm. Because New Zealand is at the end of their winter, they have plenty of snow this time of year. The Snow Farm hosted a three race series over the weekend, and the six GRP skiers at the camp competed along with other American skiers, Koreans, Japanese, and Australians.

Thursday brought a 5/10k individual start freestyle. The men went first, racing four times around a tough 2.5k course that managed to hit all the major climbs at the Snow Farm. Ben Lustgarten had a great race, winning the men’s 10k by ...
