GRP Skiers Patterson and Guiney in Rogla OPA Cups

Green Racing Project skiers Caitlin Patterson and Liz Guiney traveled to Rogla, Slovenia last weekend to race OPA Cups against some of the best skiers from the OPA countries: Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany, and Slovenia. Similar to USSA SuperTours, OPA Cups are the step below World Cup competition; however, in Europe the fields are generally composed of athletes who bounce between World Cup racing for their respective countries and the OPA Circuit.

Saturday, February 28th was a skate sprint on a short, fast course with most of the climbing concentrated towards the end. Caitlin had a strong qualifier, finishing 14th, and Liz was farther back in 21st. In the heats, Caitlin nearly made lucky loser by finishing 4th in her quarterfinal, but her time wasn’t quite fast enough ...

Ethan Dreissigacker at IBU Cup

This past weekend, Ethan Dreissigacker represented the US and the GRP at the International Biathlon Union (IBU) Cup 7 in Canmore, Alberta, Canada. The IBU Cup is a winter-long series of international biathlon races that is one tier below the World Cup. Following his strong performances at NorAm Cups 6 & 7 in February, Ethan was one of five US men selected to compete at IBU Cups 7 & 8, which are being held over consecutive weekends at the Canmore Nordic Center. Of the other four qualifiers, only two, Wynn Roberts (National Guard Biathlon) and Patrick Johnson (Far West Nordic) are competing. Russell Currier (MWSC) elected not to make the trip, and Casey Smith (also MWSC) suffered a severe crash while training on Friday before the races and was transported to a hospital in Calgary, ...

Patterson 5th in American Birkebeiner, Sargent races at World Championships

It was another jam packed race weekend for the Green Racing Project skiers as they near the end of the 2014-2015 season. Over in Falun, Sweden, Ida Sargent contested her first race of World Championships, while the stateside GRP members took on the American Birkebeiner and the Stowe Derby.

Four GRP skiers, two men and two women, made the long trip to Hayward, Wisconsin to race the 51k Birkie. Usually the marathon event is preceded by Elite Sprints on Main Street in Hayward, but this year plummeting temperatures forced the organizers to cancel the sprints and all focus was on the main event. The women’s elite wave was the first to start at 8 AM, and included GRP skiers Caitlin Patterson and Kaitlynn Miller. Although American Holly Brooks took the women’s win in Hayward, Caitlin P. ...

Craftsbury Juniors Young, Sweet, and Schwartz qualify for Junior Nationals

Aside from the Green Racing Project skiers, a large contingent of Craftsbury Nordic Ski Club juniors raced very well at the Eastern Cup in Hanover and Holderness, NH this past weekend. The Silver Fox Trot and Cheri Walsh Memorial have been the traditional end to the Eastern Cup season for many years, and the weekend also determines final Junior National team selection.

It was chilly but bluebird for Saturday’s individual start freestyle race on the winding, steep trails at Oak Hill Touring Center in Hanover. The women all raced a 5k, including U16’s and U18/20’s. Callie Young took the top Craftsbury spot as 4th U16 and an impressive 32nd overall, closely followed by Phoebe Sweet as 5th U16 and 34th overall. Also racing in the U16 division, Rena Schwartz took 10th. Orli Schwartz ...

GRP Ski President’s Weekend Update

The Green Racing Project skiers are experiencing a calm before the storm: Ida Sargent is set to race at World Championships, which start on the 18th of February, and the American Birkebeiner crew is already on the road for their race on the 22nd. However, there was no rest for the weary, as this weekend the stateside crew competed in Eastern Cups and Carnivals while Ida competed in a World Cup in Östersund, Sweden.

After a two week break from World Cup competition, many skiers used the World Cups in Östersund as a final tune-up before World Championships in Falun. The US Ski Team had solid results in both days of racing, a good indication of fitness for World Champs. Ida took 41st in Sunday’s classic sprint, missing qualification by 3 seconds, but her two teammates Sophie Caldwell ...
