Feb 18-19 Weekend @ Craftsbury

2017 VT High School qualifier:  Saturday, February 18.
We're happy to be hosting the Vermont J2/Eastern High School Qualifier racing. This race determines which Vermont racers will represent the state at NENSA's Eastern High School Championships, to be held March 17-19, at Mountain Top Inn & Resort, Chittenden VT.

Racing will be Saturday, all based out of the lower field. Races will take place on a 3k course, so the vast majority of Center trails will remain open for day skiers, houseguests and tourists. We'll have complete mapping of the course in the coming day or two, as well as signed routes out to popular loops without hitting the race trail.

The day's schedule:
8:00-9:30am Bib pick-up
10:00am Girl's Classic 3k
11:00am Boy's Classic 3k

1:00pm Girl's Skate 3k
2:00pm Boy's skate 3k

Feb 18-19 Weekend: Highland Lodge Shuttles

This weekend, February 18-119, we'll be running our Highland Lodge shuttle. We ask a fee of $5 for the shuttle to cover the cost of bus use, pay at the Activity Center prior to boarding (Bus departs 9:30am). Max capacity of 48 passengers. While we plan to run the shuttle both days this weekend, in the event of poor weather or trail conditions, we will not run the shuttle – call ahead to confirm! Ski Shop staff will make the decision about shuttle running at 4:30pm the day before. Given the switch to the Center of the Dartmouth Carnival, this may be just the ticket for those seeking a lower-key, touring experience.

GRP Biathletes Compete at World Champs and at the Jericho NorAm

World Champs:

IBU World Championships started this past Thursday in Hochfilzen, Austria with a mixed relay. GRP biathletes Susan Dunklee and Clare Egan were joined by USBA teammates Lowell Bailey and Sean Dougherty. Susan scrambled for the team and cleaned using a total of four spares. She tagged off to Clare in fourth place. Clare maintained a top-10 position until struggling in her final shooting stage where she incurred one penalty lap. The team placed 16th with a total of two penalty laps and 13 spares.

In the following day's sprint, Clare had an incredible race finishing 20th. She was the first U.S. woman across the line and shot clean. This result was her second-best finish in an individual World Cup race behind her 16th place finish in Oestersund, Sweden last year. Clare was ...

Craftsbury welcomes Dartmouth, NENSA Eastern Cup Day 1

As of noon, Monday, 6 Feb 2017, Dartmouth Skiing named us the host site for the Dartmouth Carnvial races Friday, February, 10-11, instead of Oak Hill in Hanover, New Hampshire. As part of the Saturday racing, the NENSA Eastern Cup will move to Craftsbury as well (that race was to be combined with Dartmouth Carnival both prior to moving from Hanover). The Sunday, February 12 NENSA Eastern Cup is scheduled to remain at Holderness Academy in Holderness, New Hampshire.

In recognition of the switch, start times for the racing on Saturday the 11th will be delayed until 11:00am for open men, 12:30pm for open women/U16 girls, and 2:00pm for U16 boys, to better accommodate teams or athletes that have existing reservations closer to the Upper Valley and cannot change rooms.

We'll post more ...

Climate Run and Resilience Presentation, February 16

Screen Shot 2017 02 08 at 6.45.53 PM

February 16, 2017 at 7pm in the Activity Center

The Outdoor Center will host Pavel Cenkl’s The Climate Run and Resilience presentation.  Pavel weaves together the story of running 150 miles across Iceland in 44 hours with reflections on our relationship with our environment.

Two key parts of Pavel’s presentation look at, first, how runners are as much a part of the ecological systems in which they are entangled as they are a part of their own bodies, and second, how it is critically important, moving forward, that we reframe our narrative around climate change to be one of resilience rather than one of crisis and catastrophe.

Through vivid photos, video, and engaging storytelling, Pavel traces the connection between athletics and resilience helps audiences find ways to build ...

Sargent Hits First Career World Cup Podiums in Pyeongchang; All Three GRP Women in the Points

Ida Sargent has been tantalizingly close to the World Cup podium before with a fifth place classic sprint finish in Ruka, Finland in 2014, and a seventh the following year in the same event. This weekend in Pyeongchang, South Korea, she reached the podium not once, but twice, in both the classic sprint and freestyle team sprint. The pre-Olympic test event weekend was also a successful one for GRP women Caitlin Patterson and Liz Guiney, who had career best finishes in several events. The field was smaller than a usual World Cup, because many European skiers opted not to make the long travel to Korea, so it was a good opportunity to score World Cup points while previewing the Olympic courses for next year.

On Friday the skiers raced a classic sprint, and all three women made the top 30 ...
