Feb. 20th Weekend Race Wrap

23.Feb.2010

This weekend featured racing in New Hampshire and Wisconsin, as well as the Williams College Carnival at Prospect Mountain in southern Vermont.

Junior racers competed in the Eastern Cup Finals, consisting of the Silver Fox Trot, hosted by Ford Sayre but held at Gunstock, and the Cheri Walsh Memorial at Holderness. In Gunstock, Hannah Miller grabbed her first podium of the year, finishing 3rd in the J2 girls' 5k classic. Her sister Kaitlynn matched her performance with a 3rd-place finish in the women's 10k classic. She was followed by GRP member Lauren Jacobs in 9th, and juniors Kyle Prohaska and Lia Van Dyke in 27th and 30th. In the men's 15k race, Craftsbury senior Juergen Uhl finished second, and Craftsbury alum Alex Schulz 9th. On Sunday, Hannah was the seventh J2 girl in the 5k skate race. With in a field of the J2 girls and women combined, Kaitlynn finished 12th and Lauren 14th, followed by Lia in 23rd and Kyle in 69th. In the men's 10k, Juergen, who prefers classic technique, slipped to 8th.

The rest of the Green Racing Project was in Madison, Wisconsin, for a weekend of SuperTour races. The events were part of the Madison Winter Fest, which featured a variety of winter events including snowshoeing, cyclocross, and even a rail jam in the heart of the city, thanks to snow trucked in from parking lots. Saturday featured a skate criterium. In the women's 6k, Hannah Dreissigacker finished 4th and Chelsea Little 6th. In the men's 9k race, Tim had skied very well and appeared to have snagged a clean 2nd place, but was disqualified after the race jury ruled he interfered with another skier on the run into the line. Ollie Burruss and Matt Briggs skied the whole race together, finishing 14th and 15th.

Sunday's race in Madison was a 1.5k classic sprint. All the racers ended up double-poling the entire course on their skate skis. The women's results looked exactly the same from top to bottom, including Hannah and Chelsea in 4th and 6th. Tim managed to stay on the results sheet this time, qualifying for the semis and finishing 7th overall. Matt and Ollie finished 14th and 17th, and did not advance.

Finally, some Craftsbury grads raced at Williams. Ida Sargent continued her winning ways, taking both the 5k classic and skate races over UVM's Caitlin Patterson. Jake Barton, skiing for Colby, finished 29th in the men's 10k classic, then popped a career-best 13th place in the 10k skate, helping the Colby men to 2nd place on the day, their best race of the year. After the weekend at Williams, Jake skipped over to the second day of the Eastern Cup, where he grabbed a 15th place in the 10k skate on Sunday to complete his busy weekend.
