U23 World Champs: Day 3

Last Updated: 13.Jul.2012

Craftsbury Small Boat Training Center (SBTC) athlete Maddie Lips was back in action on this Friday the 13th in Trakai, Lithuania. Would it be a lucky 13 for the Yale rower?

The first order of business was the repechage. The heavy hitters in the rep would be Poland, France (already beaten by Maddie in her opening heat) and Maddie as she represented the US. Maddie crossed the 500m line in third as Poland and France began their drag race for the top slots. While Maddie would narrow the gap over the remaining 1500m, she unfortunately ran out of course, and would contest the C/D Semifinal.

In the Semis, Maddie faced off against two Eastern European entries - Belarus and Slovenia. While Maddie would go on to win with a nearly 3 second margin, it was far closer than that finish margin may indicate. Maddie was third at 500m, moved through Slovenia in the next 500m, only moving into the lead at 1500m - and then only by 0.09s! It was the last 500m where she stretched her advantage, earning her a spot in the C final tomorrow.

Saturday will be a busy day not just for Maddie, but several SBTC alums that are also representing Team USA. Ben Dann and the Open M4x will be competing in the repechage, Dylan Gould and the LM4x are in the B final, and Nick Trojan/Austin Meyer are in the LM2x A/B Semi. Given the 8 hour time difference, much of the racing action will be taking place prior to most of the east coast waking up, but head over to www.worldrowing.com to watch online.
