This Weekend: Oktoberfest!
Last Updated: 01.Oct.2013
Coming to Craftsbury, October 5th & 6th, 2013: the second annual Oktoberfest Weekend at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center! We're excited to offer another full weekend of racing, and of course feasting, in honour of the Fall season. Come stay for the whole holiday weekend and be part of all the action, or join us for any part of it, a la carte.
The weekend kicks off Saturday morning, with the Singletrack Shootout Biathlon. Racers can choose between the running or mountain bike race, each with four shooting stages. All levels of ability are welcome: Craftsbury supplies the range, ammo, safety instruction, rifles and other equipment. Following the novice race, experienced biathletes are invited to take on the same course and test their skills against US Biathlon Team members Susan Dunklee and Hannah Dreissigacker. Registration is open now at SkiReg. Full Details.
Henley on Hosmer Regatta
After lunch, the fun moves to the waterfront of Big Hosmer Pond for the most anticipated sculling event west of the Thames: the Henley on Hosmer Regatta. Oarsmen and oarswomen in Open and Masters' classes will race single sculls two abreast down Big Hosmer Pond with the winner proceeding to the next round. The event is sure to be memorable whether you elect to challenge Big Hosmer or watch the action from the Stewards' Enclosure. If you wish to compete, don't hesitate: registration must be completed by 5:00pm, Wednesday, October 2nd. Full Details.
After an exciting day at the races, Saturday night will be the centerpiece of Oktoberfest: Sausage! Schnitzel! Streudel! A Fall feast put on by the Outdoor Center's Vermont Fresh Network dining hall team. Dinner will feature local ingredients, including our own farm-raised pig roast. Members of the local agricultural community will join us so you can learn more about the fresh foods used in the evening's meal. BYOB is encouraged. Throughout the evening we'll be entertained by local musicians, so bring your dancing shoes…or clogs! Full Details.
Oktoberfest resumes Sunday morning with the final event of the weekend, the Checkpoint Challenge. It’s a timed endurance adventure race in which teams of four run from checkpoint to checkpoint, navigating by map. At each stop, they are given a mental or physical task to complete - or a time penalty to accept if they don't want to take the challenge. The exact details of the challenges will not be announced prior to the event, but they include feats testing both body and mind. Registration is on RunReg. Full Details.
Coming from away? Stay on site! Lodging at the Outdoor Center is available starting at $95 per person per night double occupancy, and includes a race entry and three meals. Rustic lodging is available 1.5 miles down the road at Hosmer Point, and includes a race entry and three meals at the Center for $65 per person per night. Stay both nights and your entries in all of the weekend's fun are included! Full Details.
