TD Bank Tour News Update

04.Mar.2010

Course:
As had been mentioned previously, the Tour is still approximately 25 km, but will be a point to point event from Highland Lodge to the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. Maps can be viewed here. Roughly speaking, the course will follow the Highland Lodge-Craftsbury Outdoor Center interconnector trail to the Center with a small loop on Upper Bayley-Hazen and Lemon’s Haunt to the finish in the lower soccer field.

Conditions:
As of today there is as much as 2 feet of snow in the Greensboro section of the trail and as little as a few inches at the lower elevations near Craftsbury Village. Fortunately the temperatures are not expected to range too high over the next several days leading up to the Tour. It seems likely that we will able to use the point to point course.

However, there is a good chance that tourers may find some bare spots on the course due to the warming weather. We suspect that most would rather experience the spectacular point to point version of the tour with the possible minor inconvenience of occasionally taking off your skis to walk across roads and other places where the snow has melted. If the snow is severely limited we will change the course to a double 12 km loop on the Center’s trails.

Either course will be skiable by an intermediate skier with an occasional advanced intermediate section depending on snow conditions.

Transportation details:
We will have three school busses shuttling skiers to the Highland Lodge during the morning in advance of the tour start. After that point, we will have a shuttle van going back and forth between the start at Highland Lodge, the Greensboro/Craftsbury Road food station, the Craftsbury Village food stations and the finish at the Center. There may be a substantial wait so you should not start the tour planning to ski less than the full distance - the van is basically for unexpected and emergency bail outs!

Aid/Food Station Information:
The first food station will be inside the gracious Highland Lodge including juice, coffee, hot chocolate, bagels, and home made muffins. After an 8 km ski you will be treated to a roasted root vegetable bisque served trailside courtesy of Hardwick’s famous Claire’s restaurant at the Craftsbury Road Crossing in Greensboro. After another 7 km mostly downhill run you will be in Craftsbury Village where the Craftsbury Inn will be serving its traditional split pea and ham soup and the Historic Craftsbury General Store just across the street will offer a spicy red bean and rice dish. After 8 km of gently rolling terrain and a final climb you will arrive at the finish line where you will be given a special enameled Craftsbury Marathon lapel pin commemorating your achievement and directed to the final station in the Outdoor Center’s yurt where you can relax and enjoy a full meal of salad, juice, cookies and chicken alfredo with a vegetarian version available as well.

We’re looking forward to hosting all the Tour participants this weekend for what should be a great spring time ski!
