Craftsbury Podiums at Green Mountain Head
27.Sep.2010 A number of Craftsbury scullers competed at the Green Mountain Head Race in Putney, Vermont, yesterday, bringing home prizes of maple syrup and bags of apples. The Green Mountain Head is always exciting, as it is one of only a handful of races in which are still out-and-back, requiring a turn around a "stake" halfway through the race. Judy Geer, co-owner of the Outdoor Center, won the women's 55- to 64-year-old division in 23:49. It was a repeat win for Judy, who said that the race was "much harder than practice!" She received some maple syrup for her efforts. Craftsbury Sculling Center coach Ellen Braithewait finished eleventh in 26:30. Craftsbury men were led by longtime coach and occasional Small Boat Training Center athlete Taylor Washburn, who finished second in the 19- to 34-year-old division. His time of 19:58 was the second fastest time on the day in any division of the single. Next were two entries in the 35- to 44-year-old division: Fleet Manager Troy Howell finished fourth in 20:53, and Associate Director Noel Wanner finished eighth in 21:45. Geer's husband (and the other Center co-owner), Dick Dreissigacker, finished 13th in the men's 55- to 64-year-old division with a time of 22:36. The Green Mountain Head was the first head race of the fall for Craftsbury's scullers, many of whom are preparing for the Head of the Charles in late October. Although that regatta is not a stake race, Green Mountain was a great way to transition from summer's sprints to fall's longer, individual-start racing. Links: Race results Putney Rowing Club
