Boating, Biking & Activities
|| Craftsbury Outdoor Center Home ||
Over the years many of our guests have discovered the joy and beauty of bicycling at The Craftsbury Outdoor Center. Whether you seldom ride or try to make it a regular part of your life, you'll find a wide variety of terrain and route options right from your door. The quiet roads and beautiful scenery make for wonderful riding.
While most people choose a well-mapped, self-guided trip on the local back roads, more challenging off-road trails are right here too. We have some technical single track and double wide grassy ski trails right on site - check out the current map. The area is a favorite with road riders too. Little traffic and great views make for some of the best road riding around.
Canoeing and Kayaking
With over two miles of lake, you can see why not all of our guests choose to enjoy Big Hosmer facing backward! Our fleet of canoes and kayaks let one fish, watch wildlife, explore the shorelines or just relax on the calm, clear water. Whatever your aim, we have a boat to carry you and your family or friends through the quiet - and they're free for houseguest use.
Our rental shop has a great selection of Cannondale and Gary Fisher mountain bikes in a full range of sizes. Kids' bikes, pedal trailers and carriages are also available for rent. See below for rental rates, or please call the Center at (802) 586-7767 or email us for more information.

Our bikes are from Cannondale and Gary Fisher. We have adult bikes, kids' bikes, trailers, and pedal trail-a-bikes that attach to an adult bike, and allow a child to contribute as much or as little power as they wish.

For the past several years, Center visitors have been enjoying our disc golf. For 2012, thanks to the generosity of a local member, we expanded our basket count to 9 with three new baskets constructed by a local artisan blacksmith! This scenic course starts and finishes near the Touring Center and traverses a combination of open field, trail and wooded fairways. Holes range from 100 to 400 feet. Disc Golf is a very family friendly sport. Anyone can learn the basics quickly and enjoy the good exercise and fun the sport offers.
Don't have equipment? Golf disks are available for loan or purchase at the Office. They are slightly smaller and heavier than the familiar Frisbee throwing disc and are made to fly a long distance. One to three tees are set up for each basket including short red, intermediate white and long blue fairways - see it all in our Disc Golf map.
Disc Golf Course use is free for members and house guests, with day memberships available for students and seniors at $5 and adults at $10.
The Center has completely rebuilt its Permanent Orienteering Course using thirty official control placards and punches. The course is spread over the Center Campus, from Race Loop south to Elinor's hill, bounded by the lake and the Black River. A new orienteering map and clue sheet have been developed to accompany the new controls.
Members and houseguests can try the Orienteering Course for free, with day memberships available at the same $10/$5 as above. Maps, clue sheets, and instructions are available for free at the Office. Compasses are available for loan or purchase.
