Feb 27th Weekend Racing wrap

03.Mar.2010

The BKL were off on their own adventures, but closer to home several members contested the Great North Woods 30k at the Balsams in Dixville Notch, NH on Saturday, with more racing the Stowe Derby on Sunday.

Saturday's inaugural Great North Woods 30k presented every classic skier's wax nightmare of temperatures right around zero, freshly falling snow and minimal forerunning, so the tracks weren't necessarily the fastest place to be - even if your skis were working. But 6 Craftsbury members gave it a go and had lots of compliments for the setting and terrain there - definitely one to think about next year when you're planning your race calendar.

3rd Peter Harris 2:12:09
4th John Brodhead 2:12:46
46th Jay Dege 3:30:46

2nd Gina Campoli 2:26:52
3rd Linda Ramsdell 2:32:52
16th Louise Harris 3:39:55

Sunday was the 65th Stowe Derby, the annual downhill challenge for all comers. Craftsbury members participating:

FS only-
29th Connor Hunt (alum) 49:55.1
111th Jim Barton 59:58.2
157th Holly Bushman 1:04:54.1
163th Troy Howell 1:05:21.4

CL only-
43rd George Hall 1:19:15.9

Derby Meisters - Female
2nd  Kaithlynn Miller, 1:59:40.3
4th  Lauren Jacobs, 2:04:52.3
7th  Linda Ramsdell, 2:22:02.0

Derby Meisters - Male
5th Alex Schulz, 1:44:47.5
9th Keith Woodward, 1:50:37.9
13th Peter Harris, 1:58:31.8
20th John Madigan, 2:16:17.4

While Lauren was representing locally, the rest of the GRP (save Hannah) was out west at the American Birkebeiner. Thursday afternoon were the elite men and women's sprints. Tim and Juergen met some stiff competition early on and went no further after running into eventual second place, Kevin Hochtl and Maine Winter Sports' Dave Chamberlin.

Saturday gave the nearly 10000(!) participants the kind of hard and fast conditions nordic skiers dream of, and Juergen made the most of the conditions, repeating his win from the Craftsbury Marathon over 54k of Wisconsin's rolling terrain in the classic race. Juergen covered the distance in 2:28:39.4. Tim led the way for the men in the skate race, finishing 27th in 2:04:00.3, Matt grabbed 36th around three minutes later (2:07:03.6) and Ollie fought his way from the second wave to end up 44th on the day (2:08:23.6). On the women's side, Chelsea crossed the line in 2:40:09.5 for a 61st to cap her midwestern swing.

It's a tiring weekend to write about, let alone race. Congrats to all!
