Kingdom Lakes Trail |
We are working with a number of other groups to develop a trail network for inn-to-inn ski touring from Hardwick north to Barton.
A number of groups in the Craftsbury-Hardwick-Barton area envision the development of a new ski trail linking existing trails at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center and Highland Lodge to population centers in Barton and Hardwick. We envision a quiet, scenic trail for human-powered transport - including walking, running, and possibly biking and horseback riding in the summer months - away from snowmobile traffic. This trail would provide benefits in two main ways. First, it would extend the and connect existing recreation opportunities (and their fitness benefits) to areas that are currently underserved. Secondly, it would promote economic development. We plan on siting the trail such that it runs by inns, farms, historic sites, artist galleries, and shops to take advantage of the growing geotourism business in the Northeast Kingdom; doing so would allow point-to-point, inn-to-inn skiing, with, ideally, a system to transport skiers' belongings to their next destination. So far, we have the support of the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, Highland Lodge, the Glover Recreation Committee, the Northeast Kingdom Travel and Tourist Association, the Barton Chamber of Commerce, and the Old Stone House Museum.
