Outdoor Masonry Oven

Building the bread oven

Members of the GRP designed and constructed an outdoor pizza oven at the Outdoor Center. It was designed in much the same style as the traditional community bread ovens of France, and built using as many local materials as possible. We collected local stones for building the base and front arch, and local clay for adding mass and insulation to the dome of the oven. The hearth and structure of the dome were constructed using brick and mortar.

The oven is wood-fired, so it can be used to replace baking done with gas stoves. It will be fired on a weekly basis for center guests and local community members, as well as for special occasions throughout the year. Because of its high firing temperature and efficient heat transfer, it is an ideal for baking pizzas and breads, as well as roasting meat and vegetables.

The oven was constructed throughout the months of September and October, and will be fully functional this winter for center guests, ski club members, and special events. We hope that the firing of the oven will become an exciting event that brings people together to enjoy good homemade food cooked in a sustainable way.
