The Green Racing Project was back in action this past weekend with four boats competing at the second National Selection Regatta in Princeton, New Jersey. Ben Dann and John Graves entered the men’s heavyweight double while Liz and Rebecca Donald represented Craftsbury in the women’s double. On the lightweight side of things the three GRP members who had been training with the USRowing training center in Oklahoma City were all racing in the men’s lightweight pair. Phil Henson and Kyle Lafferty were one entry, while Phil Grisdela raced with Greg Flood from the training center in OKC. For the men’s and women’s doubles a top finish would earn the right to represent the US at one of the upcoming world cups, while in the men’s lightweight pair the top three finishers are invited to the ... ![]()

2013 Slush Cup
For late season fun, mix:
140m of snow. Ideally, premium grade from Mt. Craftsbury, recent vintage.
2 dozen skiers. Your exact quantities may vary, but the more diverse in ability and age, the better.
Costumes
Tasty beverages
Mix well at 60F in a low key atmosphere, line 'em up, and let them go! Makes several large servings.
This past weekend Craftsbury followed this recipe as we rolled out the last of '12-13 Mt. Craftsbury snow pile for some fun sprints and relays - the first (annual?) Slush Cup! And the event drew a good crowd: locals, national team members of past and present, college skiers, and of course a good representation from the athletes of the Green Racing Project. Competitors came from as far away as Alaska, Germany, Norway and Bulgaria (though admittedly they may ... ![]()

NSRI: GRP starts season in style
The GRP traveled to Princeton, New Jersey this past week for their first major test of 2013 at National Selection Regatta I (NSR). The NSR is the first step for the US on the road to the Rio Olympics in 2016 and the beginning of selection for the national team this year. The GRP entered ten singles in the field and they did not disappoint.
In the men’s heavyweight single the Craftbury boats posted strong results early in the time trial with all boats advancing to the heats. Both John Graves and Steve Whelpley won their heats and semifinal to advance to the A final. The racing was close the whole way down the course between the GRP rowers, much as it has been between the two in training. Ultimately it was Graves who came away with the top spot, with Whelpley a little over a second behind, but the duo’s ... ![]()

Liz spent her junior years skiing for the Utah Nordic Alliance and Park City Nordic Ski Club; raced at numerous Junior Nationals, and was part of the 2009 US J1 Scando trip team. GRP Closes 2013 Season with SuperTour Success
The GRP's 2013 ski racing season finally came to a close last week as the team wrapped up the grueling SuperTour Finals in Truckee, California. The annual race series, which in 2012 was held at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, is comprised of a four-race mini-tour followed by the 30/50k National Distance Championship. It features the top domestic skiers as well as the US Ski Team, making for a competive field.
With the exception of Gordon Vermeer, who finished up his very successful rookie season with the GRP following the March Craftsbury Spring Tour, the entire GRP ski contingent traveled to Truckee, including US Biathlon Team members Susan Dunklee and Hannah Dreissigacker. Inspite of remarkably "un-Californian" weather, including rain, snow, and everything in between, the GRP enjoyed plenty of snow and for the ... ![]()

GRP Rowers at Lanier Sprints
The GRP took to the waters of Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Georgia March 24 for their first race of the 2013 spring season. Lake Lanier was the site of the rowing races for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and was conveniently close to the GRP spring training camp in Clemson SC to allow for the squad to make the trip to compete. While there was a relatively small field racing at this event, being able to race on an Olympic course has a tremendous amount of value in terms of preparing for more competitive events. Steve Whelpley writes in a GRP blog post that while it’s possible to be competitive at the first national selection regatta in April without having done races like this to get acclimated, “it is far from preferable.”

Results: Pursuit, Overall, and 15/30k Spring Fling
Lots of racing and results today. While the sun stayed away, thanks to the abundance of transforming snow and warming temps, racers faced a variable snowpack.
As was the case much of the weekend, Sophie Caldwell and Stratton T2 had it figured out. Caldwell stretched her already sizeable lead over the field over the 10k. The Craftsbury Green Racing Project's Hannah Dreissigacker grabbed second, 38s behind Caldwell (who knew biathletes could classic ski?), with UVM's Anja Gruber completing the podium six seconds later. Caldwell's win gave her a hat-trick for the weekend. The women's mini-tour podium was a mirror image of today's results, with Dreissigacker and Gruber flanking Caldwell on the podium.

GRP Tour Sprint Results
Today's sprints tested the resolve of even the most hardened competitor - and their crafty wax techs! The skiers in the LF-only GRP Spring Tour met conditions just a bit over freezing, a couple inches of fresh snow over night, with a surprising amount continuing to fall throughout the day as the heats advanced. Topcoats were definitely a beguiling (though illegal for this weekend) choice.
Two competitors who made it work were Sophie Caldwell and Eric Packer, both of the SMS/T2 team. The teammates finished with gaps to the chasing pack in the heats. The rest of the women's field has their work cut out for them: with today's 1 minute time bonus, mini-tour leader Caldwell will enjoy a healthy cushion in tomorrow's handicap start pursuit (watch for tomorrow's start list and a cumulative overall classification to ... ![]()

Great day of skiing! Racers started the 3.6k classic event on top of the plateau of Mt. Craftsbury, schussing down to the lower soccer field and on to sections of Race Loop.
The women were led home with a dominant performance by Sophie Caldwell. Caldwell put over half a minute in to UVM's Stephanie Kirk, who edged Elizabeth Guiney of UNH by a bit over a second.
Pat O'Brien enjoyed his home course, beating Patrick Caldwell of SMS by under a second. UVM's Scott Patterson rounded out the podium a couple seconds later to claim the last step of the podium, and the last mini-tour time bonus.
Tour action resumes tomorrow with freestyle sprints over the homologated sprint course here at Craftsbury. We'll be posting start lists soon, as well as any additional info.

No Highland Shuttle, Charley's Closure
We've got great conditions on our core trails, but things are a bit more adventurous further afield. We've closed many of the outlaying trails, and as such, we will not be running a shuttle to Highland Lodge for the remainder of the season.
Likewise, we've enjoyed a great year at Charley's Cabin, but that too will be closing with the shifting season. Come celebrate the winter of fun this weekend: grab some older skis and head on up to Hosmer Point this Saturday as we wrap up the season of treating skiers to hot cocoa and cookies in the cozy confines of the cabin. Enjoy the Cabin's closing day from 10:00am-3:00pm, March 16. Biathlon World Champs Recap
GRP biathletes Susan Dunklee and Hannah Dreissigacker just finished up racing in the Biathlon World Championships in Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic. This was Susan’s second World Champs, and Hannah’s first. Nove Mesto is located in an area of Czech with rolling farmland spotted with forest and crisscrossed by tree-lined roads. In some ways it resembles the Northeast Kingdom, though with a few more soviet-era apartment buildings and factories, and more smoke from coal-burning stoves. The race venue featured beautiful newly-cut trails with challenging hills, and a huge stadium for seating the more than 20,000 boisterous spectators who came to watch.

Starting last Friday, the GRP skiers charged into the second weekend of competition at the Tour de Twin Cities with just four days of rest since contesting the first weekend. After racing two distance races on January 19-20, one classic and one skate, the second weekend (January 25-27) featured a classic sprint, an individual start classic 5/10K, and a 10/15K freestyle pursuit to wrap up the Tour.
At the Tour’s midway break, Clare Egan sat inside the top-6 mark to win overall Tour money. Nils Koons, Bryan Cook, and Dylan McGuffin sat within striking distance with ranks in the top dozen men, with Patrick O’Brien, Gordon Vermeer, and Alex Howe in the teens.

At this point Thursday morning we are still go for a 11 or 12k loop starting and finishing at the Center for the Marathon on Saturday. ~25k will be 2 laps, ~50k will be 4. Groomers say there is minimal flooding on Ruthies so it should be usable for the marathon. Core trails are in good shape but with some thin spots. Temps have started to drop from the high 40’s, and precip is swinging to snow even. Skiing is limited to the man made loop only today, other trails are being closed this morning in anticipation of freeze up later today (we don’t want to be left with frozen snow ruts). We anticipate that the trails should groom up fine once the temps drop below freezing. Thanks for your patience and think snow!

GRP skier Caitlin Patterson led the North American women with two top-20 finishes in the 10k skate and 15k pursuit at U23 World Championships last week. She tied for 14th place, 1:41.5 behind winner Ragnhild Haga of Norway.
In Saturday's 15k mass start pursuit, a race that entails 7.5k of classic and then 7.5k of skate, Caitlin was 19th. She finished the classic leg in 21st place, then skied the 16th fastest skate leg to move up to 19th place, 1:45.8 behind repeat-winner Haga.

Skiers Launch Bids at Tour de Twin Cities
Following the SuperTour to the bitterly cold and snow-deprived Midwest, GRP skiers this weekend launched their bids at the 2013 Tour de Twin Cities. A five-stage mini-tour over two weekends, the Tour de Twin Cities brings the highest level of domestic racing to Minnesota.
The five days of racing were originally slated to be held at two different venues, one in Minneapolis (Wirth Park) and one in neighboring St. Paul (Battle Creek). But lack of natural snow forced organizers to move everything to Wirth, which has snowmaking capabilities and the equipment to spread it out over five kilometers of homologated race trails. Winter Tri #1 results
The Craftsbury Outdoor Center kicked off their winter triathlon series this past Sunday, drawing competitors from Vermont, Massachusetts and even Quebec!
Warm temperatures meant that the only snow to be found was on the ski loop, but race organizer and participant Keith Woodward found a way to incorporate it into almost every leg of the race. The course began with a run from the upper field around Duck Pond and through Murphy’s field. The mountain bike was up next with a climb over the man-made snow pile “Mount Lucas” to add a technical challenge. The bike portion followed the run course twice to make a 7.25k leg.
Finally there was a 5km freestyle ski over the man-made loop at the center. While temperatures were well above freezing the ski went off without a hitch, not something we ... ![]()

Skiing over Eastern Cup Weekend
We're excited to be hosting the first NENSA Eastern Cup races this weekend, kicking off the Nordic racing season in New England. The races will be held on our 1.75k man-made loop, which is pretty much the only snow in the region.
Note: On Saturday and Sunday, due to limited snow and plentiful entries, skiing for non-racers will be available only after each day's racing is complete. Thursday and Friday, the snow is open to one and all, all day. Please check the Snow Report often for updates as conditions may necessitate changes in this schedule.

Ida 9th in Kuusamo WC; Susan Scores WC Points
Two of the GRP Ski Team’s National Team athletes did Craftsbury proud this past week in international racing action.
Ida Sargent, racing with the US Ski Team in Kuusamo, Finland, notched a World Cup career-best 9th place finish in the Classic Sprint. The sprint was the first stage of a three-stage ‘mini-tour’, so her excellent finish got Ida started toward her eventual finish of 18th place in the mini-tour. All five American women finished in the top 25, yet another stellar result in their history-making start to the season. Ida had previously made the semifinal heats in World Cup sprints (as she did in Kuusamo) but had never finished as well as 9th. The next step is for her to make the final and show her stuff against the best handful of women in ... ![]()

GRP Skiers Race Bozeman SuperTours
The GRP Ski Team followed the USSA SuperTour last week as it moved from West Yellowstone to Bozeman, MT for the season’s second set of races. The stop in Bozeman capped off a six-week training and racing trip for the group, and also furnished a final opportunity to race against a full domestic field before US Nationals in Park City, UT in January.
A lack of snow in Yellowstone forced organizers to add a race to the Bozeman schedule, so the GRP participated in three events: a Freestyle Sprint on Thursday, a Classic Sprint on Saturday, and a Classic Mass Start on Sunday. Spots for the upcoming North American World Cups (in Quebec and Alberta) were also on the line in all three races, so racers had extra motivation in addition to the accumulation of SuperTour points and prize money.

GRP Skiers Earn World Cup Starts
Every few years, the FIS World Cup leaves Europe to bring skiing excitement elsewhere. This season, that means a two-weekend stop in Canada, with races in Quebec City and Canmore, Alberta in the next two weeks.
As a quasi-host nation, the United States is entitled to extra start spots for the North American World Cups. US skiing officials announced months ago that selection would be based on results from the SuperTour races in Montana, and so the GRP – and pretty much every other domestic skier – set their sights on those races in the hopes of qualifying. After the dust settled, the GRP Ski Team ended up with two athletes qualifying – Patrick O’Brien and Caitlin Patterson – plus one athlete earning a spot from the National Team – ... ![]()

Hosmer Point Achieves Accreditation
This past summer our sister organization, Hosmer Point (HP), went through the accreditation process with the American Camp Association, which certifies over 2,400 camps nationwide. This lengthy and thorough process is one that allows camp to regularly assess itself and its practices ensuring a safe and quality program for all.
Just recently, they have received confirmation that they have met the standards and are now accredited. As part of the process, HP had to meet up to 300 standards for health, safety and program quality. Congrats to HP! You can find information about their newly accredited programs at their website www.hosmerpoint.com, or find more information about the ACA and its process at www.acacamps.org.
