Craftsbury Skiers Climb to the Castle

20.Sep.2011

A large contingent of Craftsbury skiers competed this past Saturday in the 5th Annual Climb to the Castle Rollerski race, hosted by the New York Ski Education Foundation in Wilmingon, New York. This infamously hard race follows the toll road to the summit of Whiteface Mountain, the fifth highest peak in New York State, topping out at 4,867 ft. The five mile climb has an average 8% grade. Breaking with the trend of the past few years, beautiful September weather with crisp temperatures and calm winds greeted the skiers, leading to fast times and personal records up the mountain.

Craftsbury skiers dominated the women’s field taking six of the top eight spots on the day. GRP athlete, Ida Sargent, led the charge with a second place finish behind her USST teammate Liz Stephen, who won the race in a time of 44:50. Sargent was followed by CNSC skier Tara Geraghty-Moats and GRP athlete Hannah Dreissigacker in third and fourth. Clare Egan, Susan Dunklee, and Dartmouth skier Megan Killigrew, who is training with Craftsbury this fall, finished in sixth, seventh, and eighth respectively.

In the men’s race, the US Ski Team's Kris Freeman pulled away in the final stretch from Tim Burke of the US Biathlon Association with a time of 36:18. Patrick O’Brien was the top Craftsbury finisher in seventh place, followed by Tim Reynolds in thirteenth. Bryan Cook, Dylan McGuffin, and former GRP athlete Matt Briggs finished in 17th, 18th, and 19th.
