Final SBTC results from NSRIII

21.Aug.2010

Friday and Saturday were the last two days of racing at National Selection Regatta III at Lake Mercer, NJ. The three SBTC boats competed in finals, which were the last races of the summer season for many of the athletes.

On Saturday, the women's doubles of Shay Seager and Emily Dreissigacker and the Donald sisters competed in the B Final. Dreissigacker and Seager ended up on top in a time of 7:10.5, only 0.4 seconds ahead of the second-place boat, a US Rowing entry from the Princeton Training Center. Coach Larry Gluckman said, "Emily and Shay demonstrate some senior speed and won the B final over one of the US Training Center doubles, Vesper and Potomac, posting a respectable 7:10 on flat water with no wind conditions." Rebecca and Elizabeth Donald finished fifth in the heat in 7:36.9. Gluckman said of the twins' performance, "The Donald sisters rowed hard but never felt they had the pop necessary to stay with field.  I think the summer was just a few weeks too long for these bronze medalists and they are ready to hit the Cape."

In Saturday's men's semifinals, Tom and Peter Graves finished second in their heat, just 0.4 seconds behind a US Rowing Training Center boat. Gluckman said that they showed "solid speed". The result was good enough to ensure them a spot in the A Final. They were followed by the Graves' cousin Brian Deregt and his partner Jon Winter, who trained at Craftbury for the month of February, skiing, helping with snow-harvesting, and designing the new boat trailer.

Sunday meant A Finals for all boats. In the men's double, Tom and Peter finished 4th, just under 5 seconds off the pace set by US Rowing's Will Miller and Scott Gault. After finishing no worse than second in any event of the regatta so far, this was no doubt a frustrating result. Deregt and Winter were two seconds behind in fifth.

Finally, in the women's double, Craftsbury Sculling Center coaching alum Anne Holmes and her partner Morgan Wimberley finished fifth, twelve seconds behind US Rowing's Sarah Trowbridge and Jessica Reel. Crews from the US Rowing Training Center in Princeton swept the podium in the event.

While the Donald sisters are headed home to Cape Cod, Emily will be returning to Vermont before she has to return to New Hampshire to captain the Dartmouth women's crew team. The fates of Shay and the Graves brothers are more uncertain. Winter and Deregt will be coming to the Craftsbury for a week of technical work in their singles, filling in some of the spots vacated by the girls.
