SBTC Early Season Results

02.Jun.2010

The SBTC have gotten their 2010 summer season underway in grand fashion with the USRowing Collegiate Nationals. Beyond the hopes of doing well during the May 22nd weekend competition, there was the additional motivation of getting to practice on the same course where the U23 trials would be held in the coming weeks to select the US' U23 World Championship team.

Five athletes attended the inaugural regatta and all boats came home with medals. John Hood started things off with a bronze medal in Men's 1x, behind Edgars Boitmanis of Oklahoma City University an Potomac Boat Club's Brendan McEwan.

The remaining athletes were in two pairs without coxswain, and finished 1-2. Henry Moore and Ben Johnson edged teammates Elliott Skopin and Terrence Word by slightly less than 0.3 seconds, with an eight second gap to Tennessee's entry that finished third. Moore and Johnson fought their way through their teammates who had jumped to an early lead, only overcoming them in the last several hundred to take the win. The two crews pushed each other down the course from the far outside lanes, one and six. "I think all our crews can be proud of the way they rowed today. It's always a great day when everyone finishes on the podium," said SBTC coach Larry Gluckman.

Since the regatta, the SBTC has been joined by the Donald sisters of the University of Pennsylvania who are training in the 2x and 2009 SBTC athlete John Graves who recently graduated from Hartford Connecticut's Trinity College. John's plans have shifted to the 1x and teaming with John Hood to form a 2x as well.

With a nearly complete roster of athletes, the focus narrows to U23 Trials on Lake Mercer, June 24-26. The athletes are on the water thirteen times weekly completed by another six sessions of dryland training. "This year we're working in some new directions to make up for the early trials' date. We've added circuits for quickness and balance, as well as more time in the quad for the scullers and the four without for the sweep athletes. The athletes have responded very well. We're seeing some real improvements in our Head of the Hosmer times and other benchmarks," said Coach Gluckman.

SBTC alums have been busy recently as well. The weekend prior to Collegiate Nationals, at National Selection Regatta II, Brian DeRegt and Jon Winter won the Lightweight 2x, earning them the right to compete as the US Senior National Team at the World Cups this summer. At the first World Cup in Bled, Slovenia, Brian and Jon won the B final for a seventh place finish after missing the A final by 0.31 seconds in a tight, fast semi (top four boats within 0.85s!). Brian and Jon cross-trained much of the month of January with us.

Another SBTC alum double was in action at NSR II - open weights Peter and Tom Graves. The 2x made the final, but finished sixth, missing being named the World Cup 2x from the US.

Congratulations to all the rowers and best of luck as the summer is just getting underway!
