Summer Sculling Groups

12.Aug.2008

We've been lucky this summer to have visitors beyond our program campers as several groups joined us for special training opportunities.

The summer opened with a visit from the Columbia Lions, fresh off Grand Final appearances at the Eastern Sprints – the first time both heavies and lights made the Grand Final, and the first time at all for the heavies since 1955. Both crews joined us for over two weeks of training on the calm water of Big Hosmer without the distractions of home. After their visit, it was directly off to IRAs, where the heavies battled their way into the Grand Final and the lights won the Petite Final. The season continued for the Heavies who traveled to Henley and contested the Temple Cup.

Which is precisely the same mission that brought Larry Gluckman's Trinity College Crew north to train. Coach Gluckman and his crews joined us afternoons in advance of their trip to Henley. Trinity had four boats going to Henley this year, headlined by an 8+ in the Temple Cup that eventually stroked its way to the final before falling to the University of Western Ontario.

Another group that joined us had a much less orthodox background:  Cross-Fit is a strength and conditioning program that emphasizes a very broad and dynamic approach to total fitness. A component of their program relies on the erg, so Concept2 brought around 30 instructors up to try on water rowing for a certification weekend. Imagine the most amazingly fit novices you've ever seen and you get the picture. It was a great time that broadened both the athletes' and coaches' perspectives on fitness and rowing.

Thanks to all who came and joined us. Congratulations to Columbia and Trinity for well rowed seasons, and welcome to rowing for Cross-Fit. We're flattered to participate in a small way in supporting each groups' drive toward its goals.

Do you have a group, team or club that could benefit from focused watertime in a distraction free environment? Whether your plan is learn to row, team building or putting the finishing touches on a fast crew, we can help with boats, watertime, lodging or even specialized coaching.
