Craftsbury Coaches in Open Water

05.Jul.2010

Thanks to Ellen Braithwaite for passing along this story about another variety of rowing:

Craftsbury's Hosmer Pond is renowned for its calm flat water, but a handful of Craftsbury Sculling Center coaches sought out the wild and ever changing water of Admiralty Sound in Port Townsend, Washington for the 5th Annual North American Open Water Rowing Championships.

Coming in first in the women's single in the Port Townsend Challenge was Diane Davis of the South End Rowing Club in San Francisco.  Dan Gorriaran of the Narragnasett Boat Club in Providence, Rhode Island was second in a very competitive men's single class. Ellen Braithwaite from Sausalito, California's Open Water Rowing Center and her partner Tom Dexel of Santa Cruz Rowing Club (rowing under the banner of the Either Oar Rowing Club), were second in the over-50 mixed double category.

The 15-mile race began in relatively calm water, but the course presented the usual open water challenges of swells, waves, currents, fog, ferries and container ships,  and  exciting tide rips. The fastest course isn't always the shortest distance and successful racers are always looking for opportunities to take advantage of currents and back eddies.
