Mushroom Presentation and Guided ID Walk

06.Oct.2011

This Saturday, October 8 at 1pm, please join us in celebrating the publication of Larry Millman's new book "Fascinating Fungi of New England." This is the first book devoted exclusively to the mushrooms of New England, whether they're growing in a spruce forest or your own backyard. Following an illustrated presentation and book signing, Dr. Millman will lead a mushroom exploration walk on the grounds of the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. During this walk, you'll learn the basics of mushroom identification. You'll also unlearn everything you were ever told about how to tell a poisonous from a non-poisonous species.

Dr. Millman has done mycological work in places as diverse as Svalbard, Belize, Western Samoa, the Canadian Arctic, Belize, Costa Rica, and Nantucket. His inventory of fungi at Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary in Princeton, MA, currently numbers 490 species. With fellow mycologist Bill Neill, he discovered a species of polypore (Echinodontium ballouii) in 2005 that hadn't been seen since 1909 and was thought to be extinct.

He's shared his presentations at the Explorers Club, the University of Alaska, Alaska Pacific University, Cornell, Harvard, the Center for Northern Studies, on BBC and CBC Radio, on the Discover Channel and National Public Radio, on Icelandic Radio, at Boston University, the New Brunswick Museum, the Appalachian Mountain Club, and over 100 other venues.

His new book was published just this past summer and is the only resource to deal exclusively with New England mushrooms. It is written in a non-technical language and contains full color illustrations that will help you identify mushrooms not only in the woods, but in your own backyard.

Thanks to the Center for Circumpolar Studies, we have this excellent opportunity to hear and learn in the field from such an accomplished researcher and author. Hope to see you there!
