Craftsbury Sculling Center eNews, April 2008

Spring has taken its sweet time arriving in Northern Vermont - we were still open for skiing on the 6th of April! The diehards are still skiing on the remnants of winter.

But the signs of spring are coming fast and furious here at the Center despite the lingering presence of winter. Boats shipments, our own preparations for the season, and just as importantly - lots of reservations occupy our days now. Registrations are still substantially ahead of last year's and some sessions are full. If you're coming up, it pays to get your deposit in soon.

This month's eNews is rather full: profiles of Troy Howell and Lily Carey, a Tech Tip from Marlene as well as a second one from Ed Harrold of Flexibiliy for Athletes, boats for sale, Internships, Jr. women's camps...whew. We better get started:

Coach profile: Troy Howell
Troy Howell has coached with us the past several summers, making the trek northeast from Dallas, TX. He's a driven competitor, precise and reflective thinker, yet open-minded and adventurous in his approach to training. Read our email interview. Click to find out more.

Camper profile: Lily Carey
Lily Carey is an 18 year old three time veteran of Craftsbury. The senior at the Pingree School in S. Hamilton, Ma. gave us some time to talk a bit about her path in rowing.

Tech Tip: Learn to Row, Learn to Stretch
Marlene sends us an excerpt from her upcoming book, The Tip of the Blade. The book collects much of Marlene's work and thoughts on rowing. In this piece, she helps us work out the kinks for a longer, smoother stroke.

Guest Yoga Tip: Twists
Craftsbury is happy to announce that we'll be hosting Ed Harrold's Flexibility for Athletes program this fall - Sept 12-14. In response to growing client interest in yoga, the Center is pleased to host an option that blends the best of yoga with your favorite sport. You can find out more about Ed's program here.

In the meantime, Ed gives us some twisting postures to incorporate into our routine. Do your spine a favor and give them a try.

Boats for sale
Last eNews we talked about our new demo and team boats. We've listed the whole lot of them for sale currently. The usual Peinert and Maas selection will be listed in the coming months. Boats can be held via deposit immediately, with pick up or delivery beginning at the end of September. There are some deals available on 2007 and 2008 boats that will hardly have even gotten wet! Check it out.

Internship announcements 08
Pepa has selected 15 lucky souls who get to spend anywhere from 2-6 weeks at Craftsbury! You can review our list of interns, 2008. Congratulations to our interns and a big thank you to all applicants. We have been lucky yet again to receive interest from so many qualified applicants. It's exciting to see so many people interested in rowing and these opportunities.

Still interested in an opportunity to work, stay and train at the Center? We do still have openings from Sept 7 until the 28th. So if you have an opening in your schedule, we may have a position for you. Drop us a line at sculling@craftsbury.com. Given the timing, it's a good fit for non-traditional interns or folks with a flexible school schedule.

Jr. women's camps
We've had a huge response to our Jr. Women's Camps this year. Space remains only in the June 22-27 session: Performance Sculling for Jr. Women: 13-15 - the other camp is full. If you, or an avid sculler in your club or family is interested, better sign up.

Craftsbury Road Show
The rowing carnival came to Boston at the end of February and we were happy to be a part of CRASH-Bs yet again. As always, we raffled off a free week of camp to a luck soul - Richard Creed of Farmington, CT. Congratulations Richard!

Our next foray out of the NEK will be to the Stotesbury Cup in Philadelphia, May 16-17. Great high school racing - the largest high school regatta in the world - our cookies, and another chance to win a free week of camp? How can you not want to go?

Lastly, we have a new desktop for download - an image of Amy Wilton's from the Head of the Hosmer last summer. Click to download.

That's the news from here at the home office. On behalf of Norm, Kevin, Ric, and Pepa, as well as the rest of the CSC coaches and staff,

Best,

-Sheldon Miller, Marketing Director
