Yoga and Sculling Weeks

June 1-6 2008
August 31-September 5 2008
September 21-26 2008

Yoga and sculling are natural companions. Both practices are fluid and dynamic, requiring good balance, focus and grace. In addition, the relaxing and stretching benefits of yoga complement the intensity of sculling and the demands it places on muscles and tendons, not to mention the aerobic system. Yoga is restorative, helping the body recover from challenging sculling workouts and preventing overuse injuries. Yoga can also improve key elements of sculling, yielding better posture and flexibility, more compression, and thus, a longer stroke. Most important, the rhythm of breath is the driving force behind yoga, just as it drives the sculler's powerful stroke cycle. Breathwork in yoga class translates into more rhythmic breathing on the water.

Craftsbury has been offering regular yoga classes as part of its regular programming for our scullers for six years. We've discovered firsthand the many benefits of yoga for scullers and are excited to present the two practices together in one exhilarating program. Each day will combine sculling sessions on Lake Hosmer with on-the-dock stretching and an extended indoor yoga class. Through yoga, we will focus on increasing our range of motion, improving balance, program injuries and opening tight places. Come enhance your sculling with yoga, or complement your yoga with the total-body experience of sculling.

These programs are open to all ages and abilities. Beginning scullers AND beginning yoga students are welcome.

Instructor Bios:

Margaret Pitkin is currently entering her 4th year of study for certification in Anusara Yoga. She has spent over 250 hours under the guidance of John Friend (founder of the Anusara method) and certified teachers Deborah Neubauer, Lynne Patterson, Todd Norian, as well as Siddha Yoga scholars Douglas Brooks and Paul Muller-Ortega. Born and raised three miles down the road from the Outdoor Center in Albany, Vermont, Margaret's reverence for the natural world and strong understanding of the human body inform and enrich all of her classes.

Sophia Light Smith has completed her 200 hour level certification under the guidance of Myra Lewin, who is a Raja Yoga and Ayruvedic practitioner in Maui. Sophia has experience with Ashtanga, Anusara, and Iyengar styles of yoga. Her classes blend pranayama (breath work), asana (yoga postures), and meditation. Come to play and feel free as Sophia leads you through a body harmonizing experience to promote strength, flexibility, and balance.

Emily Hershberger has been teaching yoga at the Center since 2001. She has done trainings in several different styles of yoga and is a massage therapist. Her diverse back ground and understanding of the body enables her to create classes where different ability levels can find a way to gently challenge themselves and stretch the muscles used in sculling. Her knowledge, compassionate nature and gentle voice make for a satisfying yoga class.
