The Craftsbury Marathon has added an exciting new event. Modeled after the very successful Vermont City Marathon, skiers will have the option of joining up with friends to form relay teams, each person skiing a unique leg using the classical technique.

Teams will go head-to-head, with some of the best 25 and 50 kilometer marathoners in the U.S. covering a total of 25 kilometers The new start location this year is on Dustan Fields, adjacent to Craftsbury Common. All marathon skiers along with the first leg of the relay will go off together at 9:00 AM. The untimed tour will start shortly after. The first member of each relay team will ski stride for stride with the full distance marathoners to the Craftsbury Outdoor Center and tag off to the second leg skiers who will continue with the marathoners.

The course will have a hub and spoke layout returning to the Center for each of the four relay exchanges, similar to the Vermont City Marathon. Each leg of the relay, ranging from 4.5 to 7.5 kilometers, will follow a different course incorporating parts of Great Hosmer, Windridge, Ruthies, Sams, and Grand Tour trails.

The challenge for the five-person relay teams will be to see if they can outkick the fastest twenty-five kilometer marathoner!

Shuttle busses will accommodate skiers getting to their start at the Center and returning to the Common. Relay skiers will receive their own set of awards in male, mixed and female categories. They will be served a hot lunch after the race and entered in a drawing for many merchandise prizes. Relay teams may enter on-line at www.craftsbury.com starting November 1, 2008 for the January 31, 2009 event. The Craftsbury Marathon is the biggest cross-country ski event in the East and fills fast. The field is limited to 1000 skiers.
