SBTC at Canadian Henley

08.Aug.2011

In addition to the US Senior Trials last week, the SBTC was also contesting Canadian Henley in St. Catherines, Ontario. 2011 marked the 129th edition of the week-long summer classic.

Ben Dann continued his summer to remember in the single, winning the Champ Men's event with a six second cushion. "Ben was simply the fastest sculler at the regatta," Coach Gluckman observed. Indeed, Dann won each stage of the regatta, by 5-8 seconds. A very dominant performance by the Brown sculler.

On the women's side, the marquee Craftsbury result in the single was in the U23 Women's event. Astrid Wettstein ended the regatta 5th, from nearly 50 entrants. Astrid was competing in her second Henley of the summer, having earlier rowed with her Princeton crew in the Henley Royal Regatta. SBTC teammate Katie Burke just missed the finals, finishing third in the semis to Astrid and the eventual event winner, Carling Zeeman.

Craftsbury's team boats scored several podiums. In the Senior Women's Double, Emily Dreissigacker and Claire Kuehnel grabbed the final podium spot behind Sarasota and Vesper Boat Club. Teammates Katie Burke and Catherine Crowley's Senior Women's Double run ended in the semis with a sixth place.

Claire doubled up her podium appearances with another bronze, this time in the U23 Women's Double, with Astrid stroking. Wettstein/Kuehnel edged Burke and Crowley who ended fourth in the finals.

Regatta rules dictated that Alycia Da'Loia Moore was bound to contest the Champ Women's single. She had her work cut out for her, bowing out after a game effort. Emily Dreissigacker met the same fate in the Champ event. One woman with Craftsbury connections who reached the podium however was Penn AC's (and Craftsbury Coach) Anne Holmes, claiming silver.

In a similar situation to Alycia's, SBTC athlete Lennie Futterman was thrown into his first event in a single - the Men's Champ event. While Lennie doesn't have Alycia's background in the single, the result was similar.

For many of the SBTC athletes, Canadian Henley marks the end of their time at Craftsbury as part of the SBTC program. We'd like to thank them for their hard work this summer and their contributions to the Craftsbury community. Congratulations on your Canadian Henley results and best of luck as you resume training with your college crews!
