Sierra Ski-Orienteering

15.Feb.2012

The first round of the 2012 Ski-Orienteering World Cup just concluded in the Truckee/Lake Tahoe region of California. The series of seven races in right around seven days (January 27 to February 4) also included North American and U.S. National Championships. Many skiers from New England (including Craftsbury skiers Adrian and Kestrel Owens) and national teams from Europe made the trip west. While the Swedes, Norwegians, and Russians dominated the World Cup podium, New England skiers also placed well, taking home improved world rankings and most of the national championship medals.

Craftsbury member Adrian Owens, had his best World Cup race in the sprint placing 27th and simultaneously capturing the top North American spot. His long distance event, and final sprint race were also fast enough to win North American and US championship golds among the men, with a silver in the middle distance event.

Kestrel Owens from Craftsbury raced in the 16 and under age category and easily won US Championships in all three distances. While his age group was thinner than he would’ve liked, he found great competition and camaraderie with the masters age men who were racing on the same courses. Kestrel beat all the masters men and women on his “green” course in the final middle distance contest.

Alison Crocker and Adrian teamed up to represent the US in the World Cup mixed relay as team 1. Alex Jospe and Nickolay Nachev formed team 2 (see photo). The two US teams had a good back and forth race with each other, with Alison and Adrian prevailing on the last leg by about a minute, good enough for 11th overall. The two US teams’ points added to rank the US fourth in World Cup relay standings.

Congrats to Adrian and Kestrel! The Ski-Orienteering World Cup moves next to Ukraine, then to Kazakhstan, and finally to Sweden near the end of March.
