2018 Orienteering Race Results

In the wake of hosting a Ski Orienteering World Cup in March of 2018, the Craftsbury Outdoor Center is excited to present a new running Orienteering Race during our Fall Fest weekend. The race is open to all abilities, from first-time orienteers to seasoned orienteering racers. We hope it will bring competitors a great opportunity to explore Craftsbury's beautiful forests at the peak of New England fall color with a fun and competitive twist.

What is orienteering? Think cross country race, only racers don’t know the course until they're given a map at the start. Competitors use this map to find checkpoints in varied terrain, and whoever finds the most points in the least amount of time wins the race. How racers get from point A to point B is up to them!

Race Info:

The race is a mass-start event with a time limit. The goal is to find as many checkpoints as possible within that time limit, using a detailed topographic map. Each checkpoint is worth a different amount of points, with the further and harder-to-find checkpoints worth more points than the easier and closer ones.

Participants are welcome to work together with friends or family on informal teams to complete the event, or attack the course alone.

Length
1. Long course (2-hour time limit)
2. Short course (1-hour time limit)

Timing
Each participant will carry an electronic timing chip that straps around their finger. This chip registers when racers get to a checkpoint, allowing for easy scoring after the race.

Equipment
Participants have the option to take shortcuts in between trails, and some of the harder checkpoints will be located off-trail. Because there is an element of bush-whacking, some people like to wear leg coverings or long pants. We recommend a pair of trail shoes with good grip. If you have a compass, that is a useful tool, but you’ll get around fine without one.

I’ve never done this before!
We will be holding a one-hour orienteering clinic right before the race. We encourage everyone to check it out even if you’ve done one or two races before!
