Craftsbury at the Bogburn and Stowe Derby

15 Jan 2019 @2:55

With Nationals concluded and another two weeks until the Eastern Cup resumes, Craftsbury racers travelled throughout the state to find some less traditional but equally exhilarating racing opportunities. On Saturday, Bob Haydock served up the Bogburn Classic, a singletrack excursion in Pomfret, VT.  On Sunday, racers cruised down Mt. Mansfield and in to Stowe for the annual Stowe Derby. There were Craftsbury contingents of all ages at these races and you can read about all of them here!

The Bogburn was a snowy wonderland and the older racers traversed 10k through the woods. In the women’s race, Adrienne Remick was 17th and the 9th U18 and Jessica Bolduc was 28th. In the U16 women’s race, Quincy Massey-Bierman was 1st followed by Camille Bolduc in 9th. On the men’s side, Damian ...

Sargent Races Dresden World Cup

14 Jan 2019 @15:57

After winning the classic sprint at US Cross Country Championships on January 4, Ida Sargent was back in action on the World Cup in Dresden, Germany this weekend. Dresden is a city sprint, where organizers bring in truckloads of snow to spread on the city streets among historic buildings. With limited snow in Dresden, there was green grass on the side of the course, and even a spectator on horseback in the adjacent field!

Sargent raced a freestyle sprint on Saturday, January 12, finishing 38th in the qualifier. She was just 2 seconds out of qualifying for the rounds, while dealing with an issue with her femoral nerve that is aggravated by icy conditions like Dresden. The following day, Sargent teamed up with World Cup rookie Hannah Halvorsen for the team sprint. They finished fourth in ...

CNSC Juniors at U.S. Nationals

11 Jan 2019 @6:18

Over the past week, more than 600 racers competed in the 2019 edition of the U.S. Cross Country Nationals at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. Fifteen of our CNSC juniors tested themselves against this competitive crew. The field at Nationals is so large because racers are trying to qualify for World Championships, World Cups, Youth Olympics, U18 Nordic Nations trip, World Juniors, Junior Nationals, and NCAA Championships, so talent and speed are in no short supply. Racers were treated to two classic races and two skate races, each a distance competition and a sprint.

The series kicked off with a classic distance race (10k for women and 15k for men) on Thursday, with several hundred competitors in both the men’s and women’s fields. For the girls, Quincy Massey-Bierman was ...

U.S. Cross-Country Ski Championships presented by L.L. Bean: Day Five Recap

9 Jan 2019 @21:45

On Tuesday, many competitors faced their fourth race in six days as they took on the final event of the 2019 U.S. Cross-Country Ski Championships: the freestyle sprint. The day started out gray, with a biting wind and persistent flurries as racers tackled the qualifier, but warmed up to just below freezing by the time the finals arrived.

On the women’s side, the top three qualifiers ended up taking the top three podium spots, albeit in a different order for the top two spots. Fastest qualifier Hannah Halvorsen (APU) and second-place qualifier Julia Kern (SMS T2) sprinted for the line together in the A final, with Kern edging out Halvorsen by just over two tenths of a second to take her first national championship. Kelsey Phinney (SMS T2), who qualified in third, crossed the line ...

Green Racing Project Skiers Finish US Nationals on a Strong Note with Freestyle Events

9 Jan 2019 @17:20

Racing is officially wrapped up at US Cross Country Championships in Craftsbury, VT. After notching four podium results in the opening classic events, Green Racing Project skiers continued to have good results in the final two races of the series.

After a rest day, racing continued on Sunday, January 6 with a 20/30k freestyle mass start. In the women's race, Caitlin Patterson broke away early and skied to the victory with a large cushion over second place. Kaitlynn Miller finished 10th, outpacing the pack she skied with for most of the race. Liz Guiney finished 19th. A few hours later, the men raced on the same course, this time adding two laps for a grueling 30k. Adam Martin won a photo finish in his pack to finish 5th, while Akeo Maifeld-Carucci barely missed 9th place in a lunge, ...

U.S. Cross-Country Ski Championships presented by L.L. Bean: Day Four Recap

7 Jan 2019 @22:28

Racers woke up to a dusting of new snow on Sunday morning at U.S. Nationals, as Craftsbury prepared for a full day of mass start freestyle racing. The snow continued to fall lightly throughout the day, settling on the racers as they tackled multiple laps of the tough 5k course.

The women’s 20k kicked off the day, and for the first lap, 2018 Olympians Caitlin Patterson (GRP) and Rosie Frankowski (APU) traded the lead, with a chase pack not far behind. However, over the course of the second lap, Patterson started to pull ahead. By the 10k, she had a 14.5 second gap on Frankowski, which expanded to nearly 36 seconds by the time they passed the 15k mark. Frankowski, likewise, had gapped the women behind her, and both women skied much of the grueling race alone. All told, Patterson ...

Lustgarten Finishes 2019 Tour de Ski in 42nd

7 Jan 2019 @15:38

Green Racing Project skier Ben Lustgarten has completed his first ever Tour de Ski. The Tour is the most grueling event on the World Cup calendar, and includes seven races over the course of nine days, in four different countries. We previously covered the first three stages of Lustgarten's Tour results, and he has officially completed the final stage as of Sunday, January 6th.

Stage number four on the Tour de Ski took racers to Oberstdorf, Germany for a 15k classic mass start. There, Lustgarten had one of his best races of the 2019 Tour, with a 57th place in the 15k. While the place wasn't a personal best, he was only 38 seconds back from the winner on the day. The following day, Lustgarten raced a 15k freestyle pursuit, also in Oberstdorf, and finished in 54th. From there, racers had ...

U.S. Cross-Country Ski Championships presented by L.L. Bean: Day Three Recap

5 Jan 2019 @21:52

On the third day of U.S. Nationals presented by L.L. Bean, Craftsbury held the second and final race of Paralympic Nordic Nationals to crown national champions in the sprint. Eighteen athletes took on the highly technical course, which featured tight turns, a twisting downhill, and a climb back up to the finish stretch.

The men’s sit ski qualifier resulted in a tie between U.S. Paralympians Aaron Pike and Dan Cnossen, with Canadian Yves Bourque qualifying in third. Cnossen took the lead in the final, crossing the line ahead of Pike to claim his second national championship this week. Yves Bourque placed third in the final, though because he is Canadian, the third-place national championship podium spot went to Kevin Burnside Jr.

Racers gearing up for the first day of U.S. Nationals at Craftsbury woke up to five fresh inches of soft, powdery snow on the ground, just in time to kick off a week of racing. Looke, Schwartz gift Center Gatorade POTY Grants

21 Nov 2018 @19:19

In light of Thanksgiving, it seemed especially pertinent to recognize two athletes who contributed to the Center this past year. Of course, we're thankful for all the members of our community, but we're particularly grateful for the generosity of two athletes from the Montpelier area who thoughtfully named the Center as the recipient of their Gatorade player of the year awards. Stephen Looke and Rena Schwartz were named the '17-18 recipients of the prize for Vermont XC Runners. Along with the personal accolade comes a $1000 donation in their name to a non-profit of their choice, and Craftsbury was the fortunate recipient of their largesse.

GRP Skiers Kick off the Race Season in Finland

18 Nov 2018 @10:59

Four GRP skiers started off the 2018-2019 season with FIS races in Rovaniemi, Finland this weekend. Adam Martin, Ida Sargent, Caitlin Patterson, and Kaitlynn Miller are currently training in Rovaniemi prior to the World Cup Opener in Kuusamo, Finland this coming weekend. The races were an opportunity for them to tune up and get the first races of the season over with before the ones that really count. The Russian National Team was using the Rovaniemi races as trials to choose their World Cup teams, so the field was stacked with Russians along with a few Finnish and French skiers.

The first race on Thursday, November 15 was a 10/15k classic interval start. Adam Martin was the sole GRP skier to race, placing 25th in the men's 15k. This result put him solidly in the mix in the field of 54 ...

Craftsbury Skiers Compete at NENSA Trapp Invitational Rollerski Race

6 Nov 2018 @12:34

NENSA and the Trapp Family Lodge recently hosted the last rollerski race event in the 2018 NENSA Rollerski Series, which included 5 races in New York and Vermont. The race, a 10k classic in Stowe, VT on November 3, wound its way along some of Stowe's rolling hills before climbing to its completion at the nordic center at the Trapp Family Lodge. Racers faced grueling conditions: a downpour, driving wind, and even some snow up top. However, almost 60 competitors still toed the line for the individual start race.

In the women's race, GRP athlete Caitlin Patterson had the top result of the day, finishing 3rd overall and 1st in the senior women's category. Ida Sargent finished 1st in the master women's category, good for 4th overall. Liz Guiney was 2nd in senior women, and Kaitlynn Miller ...

USRowing East Coast Fall Speed Order Results

5 Nov 2018 @6:16

GRP Scullers traveled to Princeton, New Jersey this weekend for their final race of the fall (head racing) season. Hosted by USRowing, the aptly named "Fall Speed Order" or FSO is structured to have athletes first test their power and fitness by performing a 6 kilometer erg test on Saturday; and, second, to test their speed and boat-moving skills on the water by racing Lake Carnegie's 4.25 kilometer race course on Sunday. Sunday's starting order for the head race was determined by Saturday's finish order on the ergos. An additional carrot was added for the men, as the top 16 cumulative performances on both the erg and water received invitations to row in four quads Sunday afternoon with other top-finishers.

But, what does performing well at FSO actually mean for GRP athletes? There are ...

The race series started on Tuesday, October 30 with a 7.5/10k sprint race. GRP Scullers Race Green Mountain Head: Win syrup, apples, and cider

1 Oct 2018 @19:50

GRP scullers raced at Green Mountain Head this weekend for what are arguably the best prizes in all of fall head racing. For the last 37 years, Putney Rowing Club has hosted the regatta on their small stretch of the Connecticut River, and have provided single and double scullers of all ages a truly unique race experience.

For starters, the regatta parking lot is a corn field that is usually harvested just days before the start of GMH. Volunteers usher racers that are both towing trailers and car-topping their boats over mounds of dirt and remainders of prickly corn stalks. Cars bounce comically over the now-empty rows of corn in anticipation of a great day of racing. Don’t be fooled by the low-key nature of this race, though - some of the athletes you see noshing freshly fried ...

Heidi Caldwell wins and sets new course record at Rockfest Half Marathon

1 Oct 2018 @16:58

Running camp director Heidi Caldwell certainly left an indelible mark on Sunday's Smuttynose Rockfest Half Marathon in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. Impressive feat number one was setting a new women’s course record in 1:15:15. And if that wasn't quite enough, impressive feat number two was winning the race overall! In fact, the top two finishers were women. Running camp coach Sam Davis also raced, finishing in just over two hours. The Rockfest Half Marathon draws a large and competitive field to coastal New Hampshire, with more than 4,000 participants toeing the line, as well an additional 1,700 in the 5k race.

In other news, another running camp coach Jack Pilla also put on his racing shoes this weekend. He did the VT50 in the Brownsville area, where he competed in the 50 mile ...

Russell Spring: 1926-2018

1 Aug 2018 @11:49

The Center's founder, Russell M Spring, passed Monday night. He was 92.

They cut a Nordic trail network on the land, hosted sculling camps, and added running camps a short time later. Russell and Janet, and the whole Spring family, grew the Center for the next 30+ years, before selling to Dick and Judy who reformed the organization into the non-profit it is today.

We will share the obituary as soon as available, however, we wanted to share the news of his passing. Russell's curiosity, openness to new ideas and embrace of an engaged life lived outdoors formed the much of the bedrock that the current ...

GRP U23 is designed to provide a summer training opportunity for college-aged athletes with a focus on small boat skill development, and a particular emphasis on sculling. It is one of our core beliefs that the development of small boat skills can only improve an athlete’s long-term development and ability to excel in all boat classes. Caldwell trained for and raced Boston while working on her master's degree in counseling at UVM this spring. As a former Division I cross country and track runner at Brown University, she has a background in shorter races and is a multiple school record holder at Brown. This Weekend: 2018 Mud n' Ice Quadrathlon

12 Apr 2018 @16:20

The fabled race is back Sunday, April 22! It's Craftsbury groomer Keith Woodward's favorite race (he also doubles as course designer and chief organizer). The exact course is TBD as the day draws nigh, but the plan is that you'll start your day on our ski trails with ~9k freestyle, followed by ~5 miles of running, a ~5 mile paddle, capped with a 12mi bike on lovely Kingdom dirt roads in mud season. 10:00am start.

Map of planned routes (see pages of pdf for individual legs)
Note:  Wylie Hill (run leg) remains mostly frozen for the half mile descent (where the road is unmaintained during winter). Exercise caution when running, and DO NOT try to drive up or down it. Access transition area #2 from Rt 14.

Enter online via SkiReg, registration opens Friday, March 13.
