Juniors and BKL'ers Perform Well on Home Turf

6 Feb 2018 @10:11

The Eastern Cup circuit is in full swing! Due to low snow at the Trapp Family Lodge last week, the third Eastern Cup weekend was moved to Craftsbury. The Eastern Cup races consisted of classic interval start events on Saturday and skate mass start races on Sunday. BKL’ers got the opportunity to put on a race bib and rip it up on Saturday!

Saturday morning dawned cold and crisp, perfect for classic skiing. GRP Ski at Seefeld World Cup and Craftsbury SuperTour

30 Jan 2018 @18:12

The 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics are just over a week away, but the Green Racing Project skiers have plenty of races in the meantime to keep them busy. Back stateside, five GRP skiers and biathletes raced at home in the SuperTour in Craftsbury.

Seefeld World Cup
On the tails of an all-classic race weekend in Planica, this weekend was all about the freestyle races, with a freestyle sprint Saturday and 10/15k mass start on Sunday. In the women’s qualifier, Ida Sargent placed 37th, just over half a second from the top 30. However, previously in the day she fell during her warm-up and unknowingly broke a bone in her thumb, thus was racing with an injured hand. Caitlin Patterson placed ...

Patterson and Sargent Score Points in All-Classic World Cup Weekend

22 Jan 2018 @11:48

Classic Sprint
Saturday’s race was a 1.4/1.6k classic sprint on a tough course with steep climbs and icy downhills. Qualification times for both the men’s and women’s races were around 3:30 minutes, placing it on the longer end for World Cup sprint courses. Ida Sargent qualified in 17th position, 6 seconds out from the winner. Patterson was 53rd in qualification. On the men’s side, Lustgarten placed 59th in the qualifier. Juniors on the Podium at Second Eastern Cup

16 Jan 2018 @19:58

Amid what NENSA deemed “one of the most dramatic winter events in recent history,” racers from all over the east descended upon the Ripton, Vermont trail network. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Rikert Nordic Center staff and volunteers, the second Eastern Cup of the season went off without a hitch. After Friday’s high 40’s and ample rainfall, Saturday brought cooler temperatures and sleet turning to snow, and then Sunday brought plunging mercury and howling wind making for tough conditions for athletes, coaches, volunteers, parents, race officials, and anyone else involved.

Saturday was a classic sprint day for all, where race organizers and Rikert staff creatively drew together a solid course despite snow loss. On the men’s side, Finn Sweet qualified for the open ...

Emily Dreissigacker Named to Olympic Team

16 Jan 2018 @19:37

Emily had solid results throughout the rollerski trial season, with a standout victory in a sprint race in October. She was then selected to travel with the National Team to Canmore, Alberta for an early season training camp. From here, she was chosen to go to Europe for the pre-Christmas World Cups in Ostersund, Sweden and Annecy Le Grand Bornand, France. 15 Jan 2018 @13:51

The FIS Cross Country World Cup resumed this past weekend in Dresden, Germany following the completion of the Tour de Ski. GRP skiers Ida Sargent, Caitlin Patterson, and Ben Lustgarten all competed in the double sprint weekend set right in the city of Dresden.

Individual Freestyle Sprint- January 13
It was the first time hosting for Dresden, and while they were able to pull off a solid sprint course amid above freezing temperatures, they weren’t able to lay down all the snow they had planned for the course. This meant the men were clocking sub 2 minute times, and the women just over 2 minutes, by far the shortest course on the World Cup this year. Without any significant climbs, this played out as a flat drag race, with hardly any V1 to be found. In the women’s qualifier, Sargent ...

Last week, Green Racing Project skiers finished off the last two races at US Cross Country Championships in Anchorage, AK with more strong results. GRP Biathletes Compete at the World Cup and the IBU Cup Last Weekend

12 Jan 2018 @14:07

GRP Ski at US Nationals Day One and Two; Sargent Takes on Tour de Ski

6 Jan 2018 @18:43

With the start of the New Year, the GRP skiers are back underway with their race season. Five of the GRP skiers are in Anchorage, AK, and recently completed the first two races of US Cross Country Championships. Meanwhile Ida Sargent competed in the first three (or four, depending how you count it) stages of the FIS Tour de Ski in Switzerland and Germany.

FIS Tour de Ski

Just after Christmas, CNSC juniors Marika Massey-Bierman and Bjorn Westervelt travelled to Mt. Itasca, in Coleraine, Minnesota for World Junior Championship trials. Marika and Bjorn are both in the youth category, but got the opportunity to compete against older athletes as well as their peers at the trials.

Throughout the series, racers battled wind and frigid temperatures, which led to the cancellation of the third race. In the first sprint race on December 28th, Bjorn placed 7th in the youth men’s race. He missed a total of five targets. In the youth women’s race, Marika placed 6th with four misses. The next day in the second race, also a sprint, Bjorn placed 8th and missed five targets. In the women’s race, Marika was 4th and missed only three targets. At the conclusion of ...

Running Director Departure

26 Dec 2017 @12:55

We are sad to announce that Carole Hakstian will be stepping down from the leadership of our Craftsbury Running Camps. Carole joined us two years ago, and has contributed great energy, commitment, vision and detail to the job of coordinating the camps. While she has enjoyed the challenge, she has made the decision to step down in order to pursue full-time advocacy work to promote energy efficiency. We respect her decision, though we are sad to see her go. We wish her many happy adventures

We are starting the process of seeking a new Running Director for Craftsbury, and we are lucky to have some experienced local Running Camp coaches to help during the transition. We will post a Job Description soon.

Next, Mikail Tipton was 6th, Charlie Krebs was 12th, and Daymien Ide was 13th. In the 7.7k race, Griffin Wright was 9th and Henry Hoffert was 26th, amongst a strong collegian dominated field.

In the mens' 5.5k, Mansfield Nordic Club's Aidan Burt took the win, Craftsbury U14 Trey Jones notched a second-place finish, and teammate Bjorn Westervelt claimed third place.

The good news this winter at Craftsbury:  fatbiking! We're happy to announce that we'll be formally welcoming fatbikes to selected trails and our singletrack, under defined circumstances. Some rules:

  • Skiers and snowshoers have right of way. Stop at all intersections with ski trails. We're new users, give respect to get respect.
  • When on ski trails, fatbikers must stay to the edge and stay off the classic track.
  • Respect our landowners; only ride on designated fatbiking trails.
  • Don’t ride anything narrower than 4” tires
  • Don’t ride if the 24-hour snowfall total is more than 6”
  • Don’t ride if the temp is 30F or above
  • Don’t ride if you are leaving ...

Sculling Fall Speed Order Results and upcoming VO2 Max testing

6 Nov 2017 @7:21

This past weekend, the GRP sculling team wrapped up their fall season with a two-day Fall Speed Order in Saratoga Springs, NY. Typically, the East Coast Fall Speed Order is held in Princeton, NJ at the National Team Training Center; however, due to the unusually late occurrence of the 2017 Senior World Rowing Championships, which took place in September, USRowing did not host an official Fall Speed Order.

The coaches and athletes of USRA’s Training Center Partner organizations took initiative to meet the desire for an on-the-water, final test of speed in singles. Their collective commitment to supporting the event, and Eric "Cat" Catalano’s  colossal efforts resulted in the execution of a professional and well-organized FSO that would have otherwise not taken place.

Scullers race Schuylkill, take 1st and 3rd in US Lotman Challenge, prep for Fall Speed Order

1 Nov 2017 @18:35

Green Racing Project scullers: Jenifer Forbes, John Graves, Nathan Lado, and Wes Vear, competed this past Saturday, October 28, in the 47th Annual Head of the Schuylkill Regatta (HOSR). All GRPers competed in the Redgrave Challenge Championship Single event; additionally, Graves, Lado, and Vear duked it out for the opportunity to be one of the three winners of the first-ever US Lotman Challenge.

HOSR is a 2.5 mile head race in Philadelphia, PA. If you read last week’s post re: Head of the Charles, you would know that its course was technical in nature with many sharp turns. This week, racers had to navigate through only four bridges and three turns, which were slightly less curvy and technical than the Charles but proved challenging in their own right. Seasonal Trail Use Reminder

28 Oct 2017 @10:38

With trapping and turkey season in full swing and deer season around the corner, we’d like to remind our community and members about our seasonal trail use policy. Unless a trail is on the map as part of our summer trail network, it is closed. The Outdoor Center maintains agreements with private landowners to use certain corridors of their land in the winter as ski and snowshoe trails, but outside the snowy season, there is no public trail use on those lands.

Fall and winter brings hunting and trapping season to Vermont. We urge all members and guests to be alert while using our summer trail network and to wear bright, high-vis colors while running, biking and walking on Center land through the end of big game season.

Another aspect of trail safety during this time of year is ...

Rowers compete at 53rd HOCR and prep for Schuylkill

24 Oct 2017 @18:51

This past weekend 13 COC affiliated athletes competed in The 53rd Annual Head of the Charles Regatta. The athletes enjoyed great weather with temperatures reaching the mid-seventies and manageable winds for the majority of the weekend.

The Head of the Charles is a 4800 meter race in Boston, MA that requires athletes to safely travel under six bridges, make three turns to port, and two turns to starboard. Racers must balance their hardest rowing piece against steering the fastest course in order to perform well. Collisions with other crews, skipping buoys, going through the incorrect arches, and violating the traffic pattern all result in time penalties; it's incumbent upon the athletes to know the course well.

USBA Senior Rollerski Trials

Six GRP biathletes competed at the USBA Senior Rollerski Trials. From that camp, the final U.S. team will be selected for the December World Cup. Unfortunately, Susan Dunklee had to sit out the races due to illness, but luckily she and Clare Egan are pre-qualified for the camp.

In the first sprint race, Emily Dreissigacker took top honors for the women with only one standing miss. She was closely followed by Craftsbury summer training partner Kelsey Dickenson in second. This past week the Green Racing Project had five former athletes representing the United States down in Sarasota, Florida at the World Rowing Championships. Held for the first time in the US in 25 years, we had some fantastic racing from our former GRP members.

John Graves and Ben Davison raced in the Men's Double Sculls after having prepared for the World Championships at Craftsbury this summer, coached by former GRP athlete Peter Graves. The double finished third in their heat with a time of 6:16, only a second and a half off of first place which sent them to the repechage. After winning their rep and advancing to the A/B Semifinal, they then moved to the B final where they finished second, placing 8th overall. GRP Ski Team Opens the 2017 Season at New Zealand Winter Games

9 Sep 2017 @21:47

Most years the Green Racing Project ski team starts their winter race season at a more traditional time, right before or after Thanksgiving, when snow first hits the Northern Hemisphere. However, this year the GRP traveled south in late August to train in New Zealand at the Snow Farm. Because New Zealand is at the end of their winter, they have plenty of snow this time of year. The Snow Farm hosted a three race series over the weekend, and the six GRP skiers at the camp competed along with other American skiers, Koreans, Japanese, and Australians.

Thursday brought a 5/10k individual start freestyle. The men went first, racing four times around a tough 2.5k course that managed to hit all the major climbs at the Snow Farm. Ben Lustgarten had a great race, winning the men’s 10k by ...

GRP's Patterson 23rd at World Mountain Running Championships

31 Jul 2017 @13:57

Sure, most skiers prefer to stick to the basics- train in the summer and race in the winter. However, some like to mix things up a bit and get in their running legs under them during the warmer months. Earlier this summer GRP skier Caitlin Patterson hopped in the US Mountain Running Championships at Cranmore, NH, and finished 4th, which was enough to qualify her for World Championships in July. She also raced the Whiteface Skyrace, taking first place in the senior women's category.

On July 30, she competed along with three other US women at World Mountain Running Championships in Premana, Italy. The senior women ran two laps of a 6.5k course, for 13k total. Caitlin placed 23rd with a time of 1:12:14. Perhaps most impressive is the fact that going in to the competition, she was ranked ...

Their repechage advanced them to the C/D semifinal where they placed 4th. They then proceeded to finish 2nd in their final with a time of 6:37 despite a rib injury and illness while abroad. GRP's Patterson Takes on Italian Vertical Kilometer

25 Jul 2017 @11:50

Earlier this summer, GRP athlete Caitlin Patterson qualified for World Mountain Running Championships via a successful finish at the US Mountain Running Championships in Cranmore, NH. This past weekend, she traveled over to Italy to start prepping for the race, which will be on Sunday, July 30th.

Part of her prep included jumping into the Dolomites Skyrace Vertical Kilometer (VK), on July 21st in Canazei, Italy. A vertical kilometer is exactly what it sounds like, an uphill running race that gains 1000m of elevation. Even with jetlag, adjusting to altitude, and starting in a non-seeded wave, Patterson was able to finish 14th in the women's VK with a time of 45:41.

She will now travel and train in Italy until the 30th, where she'll compete alongside international racers and 3 other US ...

Whiteface Sky Race

12 Jul 2017 @14:34

Last weekend, GRP athlete Caitlin Patterson and U23 summer athlete Kelsey Dickinson travelled to Lake Placid, New York to compete in the Whiteface Vertical K and Sky Races.

With only an afternoon to recover, the duo hit the slopes again on Sunday morning for perhaps the main event of the weekend: the 5.4 mile, 8000 feet of vertical gain Sky Race. The race involved two laps up and down a Whiteface ski trail and one flat loop in the middle. Caitlin was victorious in this event with a time of 3:18 and Kelsey was 3rd in 3:52. 2 Jul 2017 @15:57

While the SBTC athletes were wrapping up U23 Trials racing in Princeton, John Graves was busy flying the GRP flag at the Henley Royal Regatta in England in the initial heats of the Diamond Challenge Sculls Cup. Racing as Craftsbury Sculling Center, John defeated M.P. O’Leary of Oxford. In the second round on Friday, John beat J.A. Kirkwood of Leander by 2 ¾ lengths and won his semifinal yesterday over J.B. On April 18-21, three Green Racing Project rowers started their season off at the Spring Speed Order in Mercer Lake, NJ. As the first race of the 2017 rowing season, this year the Speed Order had no bearings towards World Cup or World Championships qualification later in the year, but was a good opportunity for the rowers to get in their first race efforts after a long winter of training and six weeks of on-water time in Sarasota, Florida.

Hugh McAdam had the top GRP result of the week as the winner of the men’s lightweight single. McAdam took second in the time trial on Tuesday (the 18th), but went on to win his semifinal on Thursday.
