Summer TNR Starts May 30

5 Apr 2017 @10:58

2.TrailRace5.4.16

The first race of the series will be held on May 30 and we will once again rotate between two different five-kilometer courses at the Outdoor Center, with a couple of jaunts up the road to Hosmer Point (HP). Bikers and runners alternate courses every week, with bikers contesting one course and runners the other to prevent any lapping. Both courses incorporate some of the old-school singletrack as well as the new flowy singletrack.

Once again we will be recording points for the season total, but we've changed the scoring a bit. Women and men will be scored separately this year; and we're going to a system that awards points based on time rather than on finish position - click here for full scoring details. At our last race on August 22nd, we will celebrate the series with a ...

Craftsbury welcomes Dartmouth, NENSA Eastern Cup Day 1

9 Feb 2017 @17:57

As of noon, Monday, 6 Feb 2017, Dartmouth Skiing named us the host site for the Dartmouth Carnvial races Friday, February, 10-11, instead of Oak Hill in Hanover, New Hampshire. In recognition of the switch, start times for the racing on Saturday the 11th will be delayed until 11:00am for open men, 12:30pm for open women/U16 girls, and 2:00pm for U16 boys, to better accommodate teams or athletes that have existing reservations closer to the Upper Valley and cannot change rooms.

Climate Run and Resilience Presentation, February 16

8 Feb 2017 @18:35

February 16, 2017 at 7:00pm in the Activity Center

The Outdoor Center will host Pavel Cenkl’s The Climate Run and Resilience presentation.  Pavel weaves together the story of running 150 miles across Iceland in 44 hours with reflections on our relationship with our environment.

Two key parts of Pavel’s presentation look at, first, how runners are as much a part of the ecological systems in which they are entangled as they are a part of their own bodies, and second, how it is critically important, moving forward, that we reframe our narrative around climate change to be one of resilience rather than one of crisis and catastrophe.

Through vivid photos, video, and engaging storytelling, Pavel traces the connection between athletics and resilience helps audiences find ways to ...

Sargent Hits First Career World Cup Podiums in Pyeongchang; All Three GRP Women in the Points

7 Feb 2017 @18:37

Ida Sargent has been tantalizingly close to the World Cup podium before with a fifth place classic sprint finish in Ruka, Finland in 2014, and a seventh the following year in the same event. This weekend in Pyeongchang, South Korea, she reached the podium not once, but twice, in both the classic sprint and freestyle team sprint. The pre-Olympic test event weekend was also a successful one for GRP women Caitlin Patterson and Liz Guiney, who had career best finishes in several events. The field was smaller than a usual World Cup, because many European skiers opted not to make the long travel to Korea, so it was a good opportunity to score World Cup points while previewing the Olympic courses for next year.

On Friday the skiers raced a classic sprint, and all three women made the top 30 ...

GRP Skiers Take 1st and 2nd in Truckee SuperTour; Sargent and Guiney Race in Ulricehamn

23 Jan 2017 @13:26

Green Racing Project skiers had a successful weekend of racing in California, picking up two podium spots at the Truckee SuperTour. The GRP also had two skiers compete on the World Cup in Ulricehamn, Sweden.

Truckee SuperTour Classic Sprint

The theme of the Truckee weekend was snow- an abundance of it falling from the sky and on the trails. The races were originally scheduled as a classic sprint Saturday and 5/10k freestyle Sunday, but the organizers had to cancel the second day’s races due to unsafe road conditions up to the venue. In the women’s classic sprint qualifier, Kaitlynn Miller took the win by over 3 seconds, followed by Caitlin Patterson in 6th, Heather Mooney in 14th, and Mary O’Connell in 16th. Ben Lustgarten was 4th in the men’s qualifier. They improved upon those ...

Juniors Race in Craftsbury and Lake Placid

23 Jan 2017 @12:04

This weekend, there were two racing opportunities for juniors. One was on home turf at the Mansfield Nordic Duathlon, while the other was across Lake Champlain at the Lake Placid Junior National Qualifier.

A small Craftsbury contingent went to Lake Placid, where Coach Ollie was also serving as the Assistant Technical Delegate. On Saturday, the women competed in a 5k skate race, in a field combined with collegiate racers. This led to some fast and furious racing, where Avery Ellis led the way in 76th (31st U20). Phoebe Sweet was 80th (4th U18) and Jordi Kulis was 121st (11th U18). On Sunday, Finn Sweet was the lone Craftsbury representative, placing 5th place in the U16 boys 5k skate race.

Close to home, Mansfield Nordic hosted their annual Duathlon, which was well-attended by ...

Egan and Dunklee Compete at World Cup 6 in Antholz, Italy

23 Jan 2017 @11:24

Clare Egan and Susan Dunklee began World Cup 6 this past week with a 15k individual race. Clare was the top American finisher in the women's race placing 59th with 6 misses. She was followed by Susan in 71st. Susan was the only American to qualify for the mass start race in which she placed 24th with 5 misses. She had the best first stage, shooting clean with the second fastest range time, and briefly took the lead. In her next stage she missed two shots and dropped to 14th. After stage four she was in 25th, but she was able to overtake France's Anais Bescond in the final lap to place 24th. She skied the 16th fastest course time of the day.

DEC Lake Meeting

20 Jan 2017 @10:36

Saturday, January 21, 10:00am – tomorrow - the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will be holding a public meeting in the Craftsbury Academy Gym. This past summer there were safety violations - specifically high-speed boats traveling too close to human-powered boats. These violations, taken in the context of ever-growing lake use by boats of all kinds, have raised concern at the State level, and they are considering establishing new rules for the lake. The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is spearheading that process, and is gathering input from stakeholders about whether and how rule-making can reduce conflicts among users of Great Hosmer Pond.

The Outdoor Center’s hope is to continue to offer programming of all kinds on Big Hosmer, as we have for over 40 ...

We are pleased to announce exciting new opportunities to be a part of the action this winter. We have a niche for almost everyone, regardless of your interest or age, and the vast majority of these opportunities do NOT require you to be a skier - only to be a friendly, generous representative of the NEK!

The Craftsbury Marathon is our largest one-day event and offers a special fund-raising opportunity for volunteers and non-profit organizations. Individual volunteers get lunch and an entry in our year-end Volunteer Raffle Drawing, plus $5 for each volunteer hour you put in will go towards a donation to one of this year's selected charities:

Sargent Places 12th in Toblach World Cup Sprint

16 Jan 2017 @12:29

Following a successful weekend of OPA Cup racing in Planica, Slovenia, GRP skier Ida Sargent was back on the World Cup and ready to go. The cross country WC tour resumed in Toblach, Italy this Saturday and Sunday, January 14th and 15th, following the Tour de Ski. Some athletes who competed in the Tour skipped the Toblach races, but most of the top sprinters were ready to toe the line for the double header freestyle sprint weekend.

On Saturday, Sargent qualified 16th in the individual freestyle sprint, +5:09 from Norwegian skier Maiken Caspersen Falla's qualifying mark. Sargent then went on to take second in her quarterfinal heat and advance automatically to the semifinals. Although she was extremely close to the leader (only +0:86 from first), she placed 6th in the second semifinal and ...

Juniors Take on US Nationals

16 Jan 2017 @7:59

Last week Phoebe Sweet, Callie Young, and Alex Lawson travelled to Utah to compete at US Nationals at Solider Hollow alongside much of the GRP. This year boasted one of the largest US Nationals fields ever, with hundreds of racers from both the United States and Canada.

The week was full of variable and challenging weather conditions, further increasing the difficulty of racing at nearly 6,000 feet. The series kicked off on Saturday with a 10k skate race, which was delayed one hour due to cold weather.  Once the race was under way, Alex placed 104th (19th U20), Phoebe was 160th (31st U18), and Callie was 169th (37th U18).

Sunday brought warming temperatures, lots of rain, and a day full of classic sprinting. Alex once again led the way for the girls in 121st overall (23rd U20).

The past week brought with it an ever variable mix of weather to Soldier Hollow, Utah, where six of the Green Racing Project skiers were competing in US National Championships. While the wax techs and skiers battled an onslaught of cold temperatures, rain, sleet, hail, and snow, they were able to come out on the other end with a handful of podiums and even a National Championship! While US Nationals traditionally have mostly American competitors, in this case the field included Canadian and collegiate athletes, which upped the level of competition from normal. Marika Massey- Bierman races at Biathlon Junior World Trials

This event will be held February 22-28, at a site to be determined in early January. Marika Massey- Bierman was the sole Craftsbury representative. Bjorn Westervelt planned to race, but was sick.

The first race was held on Wednesday and was a sprint, where competitors shoot once prone and once standing. Marika missed a total of five shots and finished 15th.  The next race was held on Thursday, during a huge snowstorm, which makes shooting more difficult. This was a pursuit race with four shootings; two prone, two standing. Athletes start the race based on their time back ...

Training at Craftsbury during the Holiday Vacation

27 Dec 2016 @19:43

We are very excited to be able to offer solid ski conditions on the bulk of our Core Trails heading into the holiday break. Thanks to Herculean efforts by our grooming staff, we have a solid base on most of the trails, augmented by manmade in a few places. The skating is fast and the tracks are hard and things will only improve with more natural snow.

The holiday break often finds Craftsbury packed full of skiers, so in an effort to alleviate some congestion in our Activity Center lodge, we are asking that visiting high school and club programs keep their gear on their busses or in their vans when possible. The lodge is a great place to come inside to warm up, grab a bite to eat, or rest weary legs for a spell, but the space seems to fill up quick. If teams can leave their bags on ...

Sargent Consistent Again in Davos Sprint, GRP on Silver Star NorAm Podium

12 Dec 2016 @20:43

With the early ski season well underway, a few themes are emerging for Green Racing Project skiers. One is that Ida Sargent is consistently qualifying for World Cup sprint heats, proving she has the speed to compete with the world’s best in both skate and classic. Another is that the domestic GRP skiers keep consistently hitting the NorAm/SuperTour podium, especially in classic races. With period 1 of the SuperTour in the books, and just one weekend remaining in period 1 of the World Cup, they will look to continue and improve upon these results in January.

Davos World Cup
The World Cup in Davos, Switzerland kicked off Saturday with a 15k freestyle individual for the women. GRP skier Caitlin Patterson took 44th place on a tough course at altitude. In the following day’s freestyle ...

Top-Results for Susan Dunklee at World Cup 2 in Pokljuka

12 Dec 2016 @19:56

The second weekend of World Cup biathlon racing took place in Pokljuka, Slovenia beginning with a sprint.

Susan Dunklee had her best result of the season (so far) finishing 11th and cleaning both her prone and standing stages with the second and third fastest range times of the day. Susan's been working to improve her shooting speed for the past two years and her effort is paying off. Clare Egan finished the sprint in 53rd with two standing misses. Both Susan and Clare qualified for the following day's pursuit.

In the pursuit, Susan had another impressive race moving up from her 11th place starting position to finish 5th overall. She cleaned her first three shooting stages leaving the range in second place. She missed one shot in her fourth stage which put her in seventh after ...

GRP Hits SuperTour Podium; Sargent and Patterson Complete Lillehammer Mini-Tour

6 Dec 2016 @16:01

In the first race weekend of December, Green Racing Project skiers had more solid results across the board. Five GRP skiers raced the opening SuperTours in West Yellowstone, Montana, while Ida Sargent and Caitlin Patterson continued the World Cup season at its second stop in Lillehammer, Norway.

Lillehammer World Cup
This year Lillehammer hosted a World Cup mini-tour, which included three races beginning on Friday. Ida Sargent again qualified for Friday’s classic sprint heats in 26th place, along with three of her US teammates. It was Ida’s first time qualifying for the sprints heat in a Norwegian World Cup, which are usually stacked with fast Scandinavian Nation’s Group skiers. GRP Biathletes Compete at World Cup 1 and the Canmore NorAm

5 Dec 2016 @19:10

The 2016-17 biathlon season is underway! This past week the GRP had biathletes competing at both the World Cup in Oestersund, Sweden as well as the NorAm in Canmore, Alberta.

World Cup 1:

Clare Egan and Susan Dunklee kicked off the World Cup season in last Sunday's mixed relay along with USBA teammates Lowell Bailey and Tim Burke. Susan scrambled for the team and, after cleaning both shooting stages while only using three spares, tagged off to Clare in first place. Clare skied with the leaders and cleaned her first shooting, but struggled with the wind during her standing stage. The team finished 8th with a total of two penalty laps.

World Cup racing action continued in Oestersund with the individual race in which Clare finished 40th, cleaning her final two shooting stages. Susan had to ...

Scholarship Fund Meets $5000 Match Goal

29 Nov 2016 @11:17

The Craftsbury Outdoor Center is excited to announce that the Kathy Wright Memorial Scholarship Fund met its $5,000 goal in matching donations, raising $10,000 to support our youth skiers. We owe a huge thank-you to everyone in our community—and beyond it—who contributed to the fund, and to the anonymous donor who set the match goal this past summer.

Craftsbury believes that access to the sport of cross country skiing should not be restricted by income. Skiing is an expensive sport, but we are lucky to be part of an amazing community that shares our vision of access and affordability. Scholarships are made possible by the generosity of many families that support the Outdoor Center, and go towards offsetting the costs of ski programs or race/camp travel for Craftsbury junior and BKL ...

Green Racing Project World Cup Preview

25 Nov 2016 @17:22

The weekend following Thanksgiving may mean shopping sprees for most of the country, but for the ski and biathlon world, it means something more exciting - the start of the World Cup season! The Green Racing Project has four athletes starting on the World Cup this November: Susan Dunklee and Clare Egan on the biathlon side, and Ida Sargent and Caitlin Patterson for cross country.

The World Cup skiers kick off the season in Kuusamo, Finland with a double set of classic races. Saturday the 26th is a classic sprint on the notoriously tough course in Ruka, which favors strong classic striders. Ida Sargent has been 5th and 7th on this course in the past, so look for a good result from her. Patterson will also race the classic sprint. Sunday the 27th is a 10k classic interval start, a ...

Sargent and Patterson Top 15 in Saariselka FIS Races

20 Nov 2016 @14:21

GRP skiers Ida Sargent and Caitlin Patterson had solid results in another set of Finnish FIS races this weekend, this time in Saariselka, Finland. The two are using these FIS races as tune-ups for the Ruka World Cup opener next weekend, and so far have posted multiple top 10’s and top 15’s. The Saariselka races were stacked with skiers from the Russian National Team, which used them as World Cup selection races, but the field also included top German, Belarussian, Estonian, and Austrian skiers.

On Friday both Sargent and Patterson raced a 5k classic individual start with temperatures hovering around zero degrees Celcius, which can be notoriously difficult for waxing. Sargent finished 19th, +1:00 behind Russian Yulia Tchekaleva, who took the win. Patterson was 23rd, +1:06.

Sargent and Patterson Post Top 10’s in Olos FIS Races

15 Nov 2016 @10:56

The 2016-2017 ski season is officially underway, albeit only in the very far north of Scandinavia! GRP skiers Ida Sargent and Caitlin Patterson were in Olos, Finland last weekend competing in a set of FIS races. Many World Cup skiers use these races as tune-up events for the first World Cups of the year, so the women’s field was very strong and included the top Finnish national team members as well as former World Cup overall winner Justyna Kowalczyk.

Friday kicked off with a 1.4k classic sprint. Ida had a solid qualifying round in 5th place, 6 seconds behind Kowalczyk. Unlike typical sprint brackets, where 30 qualifiers go on to compete in 6-person heats, the Olos races were old-school sprint rounds of 16, with 4 people in each qualifier. People were lined up outside before we opened our doors at 10:00 a.m., and the bike shop and Activities Center were soon packed with people looking for gear. All told, we sold about $25,000-worth of used skis and bikes, roughly half of which were consignments from the community. The other half of items sold were used Outdoor Center rental bikes and skis moving on to new homes. It was really fun to watch community members walk out the door with “new” gear, especially the little kids who were getting their first pair of skis or first mountain bike.

Twenty percent of the proceeds from consigned equipment sales went directly to the Kathy Wright Memorial Scholarship Fund, which ...

8 Nov 2016 @21:20

Fall speed orders always feature a unique format, with racing consisting of a 6k erg on Saturday and a 4.35k race in a single on Sunday. For everyone who attended (including COC community rower, Annie Rowell), it was an opportunity to gauge their speed against a lot of other athletes, across a couple of platforms.

After traveling most of Friday, it seemed like most of the athletes were slightly off their game for the Saturday morning erg. Wes, in the Men’s open weight single category, finished 14th with a time of 19:45. Trail Improvements

27 Oct 2016 @17:42

We’re excited about a couple of ski trail improvements that you’ll notice next time you on the trails.

You may have noticed some trail work around the intersection with Duck Pond and Murphy’s Field, along the road as you approach the Center. Over the summer, we were approached by the owners of the property about a possible purchase. Given the importance of that access route to skiers, we were interested indeed, and closed on the property in September – a big thank you to the former owners for the opportunity. This has allowed us to open up the canopy a bit, widen a few tights spots and generally smooth this section, which gets so much use throughout both good and bad winters! The house itself will also serve us well, whether for staff housing or rental, tbd. As with the rest of ...
