Marika Massey- Bierman races at Biathlon Junior World Trials

1 Jan 2017 @17:52

In the days between Christmas and New Years, a group of more than forty young biathletes descended on the Ethan Allen Firing Range in Jericho to compete for starting spots at the Biathlon World Juniors competition. This event will be held February 22-28, at a site to be determined in early January. Marika Massey- Bierman was the sole Craftsbury representative. Bjorn Westervelt planned to race, but was sick.

The first race was held on Wednesday and was a sprint, where competitors shoot once prone and once standing. Marika missed a total of five shots and finished 15th.  The next race was held on Thursday, during a huge snowstorm, which makes shooting more difficult. This was a pursuit race with four shootings; two prone, two standing. Athletes start the race based on their time back ...

NCUHS Race this Friday

28 Dec 2016 @13:57

We're excited to host the 2016 Div I North Country Falcon's Women's ski team's home meet this Friday, December 30. First wave of 10 skiers goes out at 2:00pm - see course over at Center's Strava route. Race will start, lap and finish thru the lower soccer field. JV does 1 lap, Varsity does 2 laps.

Course won't be closed to skiers during the racing, but we do ask everyone to be aware of the racers and be prepared to give space as needed during the afternoon. Check out our Snow Report if you're looking for options outside of the course (and there's a lot of good ones right now). The folks in the Activity Center are well-equipped to help you out with planning a tour for the day. OR, stick around and check out the stars of tomorrow, racing locally - always a great choice too!

Training at Craftsbury during the Holiday Vacation

27 Dec 2016 @19:43

We are very excited to be able to offer solid ski conditions on the bulk of our Core Trails heading into the holiday break. Thanks to Herculean efforts by our grooming staff, we have a solid base on most of the trails, augmented by manmade in a few places. The skating is fast and the tracks are hard and things will only improve with more natural snow.

The holiday break often finds Craftsbury packed full of skiers, so in an effort to alleviate some congestion in our Activity Center lodge, we are asking that visiting high school and club programs keep their gear on their busses or in their vans when possible. The lodge is a great place to come inside to warm up, grab a bite to eat, or rest weary legs for a spell, but the space seems to fill up quick. If teams can leave their bags on ...

Susan Dunklee on the Podium at World Cup 3 in Nove Mesto

20 Dec 2016 @13:23

This past weekend in Nove Mesto, Susan Dunklee earned a place in the flower ceremony not just once, but twice. In the sprint, Susan cleaned both shooting stages and then skied her way onto the podium in third, only 5 seconds behind the race winner, France's Anais Chevalier. This marks Susan's first World Cup podium of the season and the third World Cup podium of her career. Also racing the sprint was Clare Egan who finished 62nd with three penalties. She was only 1.6 seconds out of qualifying for the pursuit.

The pursuit was a tight and exciting race. After cleaning her first shooting stage, Susan left the range in the lead. However, she ended up with one prone penalty in her second stage and one standing penalty in her third stage which moved her back to fourth (Susan's best-ever ...

First Eastern Cup of the Season in the Books

19 Dec 2016 @22:31

The juniors kicked of their racing season this weekend at the first Eastern Cup, held at Craftsbury. As always, the first Eastern Cup draws a large and competitive field, putting everyone’s summer and fall training to the test.

The U16s boys were the first racers of the weekend, doing a 5k classic race. Griffin Wright was the first Craftsbury racer, in 4th, followed by Finn Sweet in 13th. Bjorn Westervelt was 23rd and Jack Young was 34th. The next race of the day was for the entire women’s field, who all raced 5k. Alex Lawson led the way in 27th (8th U20), followed by Phoebe Sweet in 46th (9th U18) and Callie Young less than a second behind in 47th (10th U18). Patterson Races La Clusaz Mass Start, GRP Ski at Craftsbury Eastern Cup

19 Dec 2016 @20:00

In the final races before the holiday season, Green Racing Project skiers had a handful of top finishes, along with their share of crashes and broken equipment! Caitlin Patterson finished off period one of the cross country World Cup in La Clusaz, France, while five of the GRP skiers raced at home in a two-day pursuit at the Craftsbury Eastern Cup.

La Clusaz World Cup
The cross country World Cup wrapped up for the holidays in La Clusaz, on a fully man-made loop of white snow snaking through brown open fields. Caitlin Patterson had a great start to the 10k skate mass start on Saturday, and was skiing in the top twenty at one point. She was in position to finish well within World Cup points when she fell on the final downhill corner and ended up in 37th. She finishes period one of the ...

Sargent Consistent Again in Davos Sprint, GRP on Silver Star NorAm Podium

12 Dec 2016 @20:43

With the early ski season well underway, a few themes are emerging for Green Racing Project skiers. One is that Ida Sargent is consistently qualifying for World Cup sprint heats, proving she has the speed to compete with the world’s best in both skate and classic. Another is that the domestic GRP skiers keep consistently hitting the NorAm/SuperTour podium, especially in classic races. With period 1 of the SuperTour in the books, and just one weekend remaining in period 1 of the World Cup, they will look to continue and improve upon these results in January.

The World Cup in Davos, Switzerland kicked off Saturday with a 15k freestyle individual for the women. GRP skier Caitlin Patterson took 44th place on a tough course at altitude. In the following day’s freestyle ...

Top-Results for Susan Dunklee at World Cup 2 in Pokljuka

12 Dec 2016 @19:56

The second weekend of World Cup biathlon racing took place in Pokljuka, Slovenia beginning with a sprint.

Susan Dunklee had her best result of the season (so far) finishing 11th and cleaning both her prone and standing stages with the second and third fastest range times of the day. Susan's been working to improve her shooting speed for the past two years and her effort is paying off. Clare Egan finished the sprint in 53rd with two standing misses. Both Susan and Clare qualified for the following day's pursuit.

In the pursuit, Susan had another impressive race moving up from her 11th place starting position to finish 5th overall. She cleaned her first three shooting stages leaving the range in second place. She missed one shot in her fourth stage which put her in seventh after ...

GRP Hits SuperTour Podium; Sargent and Patterson Complete Lillehammer Mini-Tour

6 Dec 2016 @16:01

Lillehammer World Cup
This year Lillehammer hosted a World Cup mini-tour, which included three races beginning on Friday. Ida Sargent again qualified for Friday’s classic sprint heats in 26th place, along with three of her US teammates. It was Ida’s first time qualifying for the sprints heat in a Norwegian World Cup, which are usually stacked with fast Scandinavian Nation’s Group skiers. GRP Biathletes Compete at World Cup 1 and the Canmore NorAm

The 2016-17 biathlon season is underway! This past week the GRP had biathletes competing at both the World Cup in Oestersund, Sweden as well as the NorAm in Canmore, Alberta.

World Cup 1:

Clare Egan and Susan Dunklee kicked off the World Cup season in last Sunday's mixed relay along with USBA teammates Lowell Bailey and Tim Burke. Susan scrambled for the team and, after cleaning both shooting stages while only using three spares, tagged off to Clare in first place. Clare skied with the leaders and cleaned her first shooting, but struggled with the wind during her standing stage. The team finished 8th with a total of two penalty laps.

World Cup racing action continued in Oestersund with the individual race in which Clare finished 40th, cleaning her final two shooting stages. Susan had to ...

Scholarship Fund Meets $5000 Match Goal

29 Nov 2016 @11:17

The Craftsbury Outdoor Center is excited to announce that the Kathy Wright Memorial Scholarship Fund met its $5,000 goal in matching donations, raising $10,000 to support our youth skiers. We owe a huge thank-you to everyone in our community—and beyond it—who contributed to the fund, and to the anonymous donor who set the match goal this past summer.

Craftsbury believes that access to the sport of cross country skiing should not be restricted by income. Skiing is an expensive sport, but we are lucky to be part of an amazing community that shares our vision of access and affordability. Scholarships are made possible by the generosity of many families that support the Outdoor Center, and go towards offsetting the costs of ski programs or race/camp travel for Craftsbury junior and BKL ...

Green Racing Project World Cup Preview

25 Nov 2016 @17:22

The weekend following Thanksgiving may mean shopping sprees for most of the country, but for the ski and biathlon world, it means something more exciting - the start of the World Cup season! The Green Racing Project has four athletes starting on the World Cup this November: Susan Dunklee and Clare Egan on the biathlon side, and Ida Sargent and Caitlin Patterson for cross country.

The World Cup skiers kick off the season in Kuusamo, Finland with a double set of classic races. Saturday the 26th is a classic sprint on the notoriously tough course in Ruka, which favors strong classic striders. Ida Sargent has been 5th and 7th on this course in the past, so look for a good result from her. Patterson will also race the classic sprint. Sunday the 27th is a 10k classic interval start, a ...

Sargent and Patterson Top 15 in Saariselka FIS Races

20 Nov 2016 @14:21

GRP skiers Ida Sargent and Caitlin Patterson had solid results in another set of Finnish FIS races this weekend, this time in Saariselka, Finland. The two are using these FIS races as tune-ups for the Ruka World Cup opener next weekend, and so far have posted multiple top 10’s and top 15’s. The Saariselka races were stacked with skiers from the Russian National Team, which used them as World Cup selection races, but the field also included top German, Belarussian, Estonian, and Austrian skiers.

On Friday both Sargent and Patterson raced a 5k classic individual start with temperatures hovering around zero degrees Celcius, which can be notoriously difficult for waxing. Sargent finished 19th, +1:00 behind Russian Yulia Tchekaleva, who took the win. Patterson was 23rd, +1:06.

Sargent and Patterson Post Top 10’s in Olos FIS Races

15 Nov 2016 @10:56

The 2016-2017 ski season is officially underway, albeit only in the very far north of Scandinavia! GRP skiers Ida Sargent and Caitlin Patterson were in Olos, Finland last weekend competing in a set of FIS races. Many World Cup skiers use these races as tune-up events for the first World Cups of the year, so the women’s field was very strong and included the top Finnish national team members as well as former World Cup overall winner Justyna Kowalczyk.

Friday kicked off with a 1.4k classic sprint. Ida had a solid qualifying round in 5th place, 6 seconds behind Kowalczyk. Unlike typical sprint brackets, where 30 qualifiers go on to compete in 6-person heats, the Olos races were old-school sprint rounds of 16, with 4 people in each qualifier. The other half of items sold were used Outdoor Center rental bikes and skis moving on to new homes. 8 Nov 2016 @21:20

The GRPRowers completed their fall season last weekend at the East Coast Speed Order, in Princeton, NJ. Fall speed orders always feature a unique format, with racing consisting of a 6k erg on Saturday and a 4.35k race in a single on Sunday. For everyone who attended (including COC community rower, Annie Rowell), it was an opportunity to gauge their speed against a lot of other athletes, across a couple of platforms.

After traveling most of Friday, it seemed like most of the athletes were slightly off their game for the Saturday morning erg. Wes, in the Men’s open weight single category, finished 14th with a time of 19:45. In the Women’s open weight single category, Annie Rowell and Liz Vogt finished 9th and 11th, with times of 22:33 and 22:47, respectively. Jenny McIlvane finished ...

Craftsbury at HOCR

1 Nov 2016 @14:32

October 22nd and 23rd was Head of the Charles weekend! While it was classic HOCR weather: cold, windy, and raining, the results of the racing was, overall, more enlightening. Craftsbury had a solid showing over the weekend, with current and former GRP members impressively racing up the course.

Hugh McAdam had one of the more stand out races, winning the lightweight Men’s championship single with a time of 18:33, a 39 second margin ahead of 2nd place. In a steep field for the Women’s championship single, and her first HOCR ever, Liz Vogt placed 14th, with a time of 20:42. Jenny Mcilvane finished 7th in the lightweight Women’s championship single, with a time of 21:32.

Trail Improvements

27 Oct 2016 @17:42

We’re excited about a couple of ski trail improvements that you’ll notice next time you on the trails.

You may have noticed some trail work around the intersection with Duck Pond and Murphy’s Field, along the road as you approach the Center. Over the summer, we were approached by the owners of the property about a possible purchase. Given the importance of that access route to skiers, we were interested indeed, and closed on the property in September – a big thank you to the former owners for the opportunity. This has allowed us to open up the canopy a bit, widen a few tights spots and generally smooth this section, which gets so much use throughout both good and bad winters! The house itself will also serve us well, whether for staff housing or rental, tbd. As with the rest of ...

11 Oct 2016 @20:59

Thanks to the 36 competitors who braved the impending rain and the unpredictable challenges during our 2016 Craftsbury Checkpoint Challenge! The organizers and station managers, primarily GRP skiers and biathletes, enjoyed setting up 10 tricky stations and sharing laughs with the competitors as they strove to complete team-building tasks. Nine teams of four members each ran around on the COC trail system, navigating their way to stations marked on the map provided, where they could complete tasks to earn points. The winning team, Trump That (Keith Woodward, Eric Schulz, Eric Remick, Peter Duval), earned 323 points within the 2 hour time limit. Trump That earned points at 9 of the 10 stations, and though certain stations like Flag Matching gave them a bit of difficulty, they shone ...

Matching Donations Being Accepted to the Kathy Wright Memorial Scholarship Fund

8 Sep 2016 @8:00

The Craftsbury Outdoor Center is excited to announce that an anonymous donor has recently pledged to match up to $5,000 in donations to the junior scholarship fund. The fund is being renamed the Kathy Wright Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of Kathy Wright, a member of our community who passed away in March 2016.

Craftsbury believes that access to the sport of cross country skiing should not be restricted by income. Skiing is an expensive sport, but we are lucky to be part of an amazing community that shares our vision of access and affordability. Scholarships are made possible by the generosity of many families that support the Outdoor Center, and go towards offsetting the costs of ski programs or race/camp travel for Craftsbury junior and BKL skiers in need.

GRP Biathlon at North American Rollerski Biathlon Championships

19 Aug 2016 @15:07

Nine members of the GRP biathlon and ski teams raced this past weekend in Jericho, VT at the North American Rollerski Biathlon Championships. Though thunderstorms were in the forecast, the rain mostly held off and the biathletes faced heat and humidity instead. From there, USBA will pick the World Cup team for the upcoming season. Two of the GRP biathletes, Susan Dunklee and Clare Egan, are already prequalified for the upcoming World Cup season, but the rest of the GRP can use these races as an opportunity to demonstrate their rollerski speed and early season shooting to the National Team coaches.

Juniors End Seasons at SuperTour Finals and Spring Fling Events

This weekend brought two chances for Craftsbury juniors to contest their final races of the year: both on the same course, but two very different races. On Saturday, Phoebe Sweet competed in the SuperTour Finals Long Distance National Championships junior race, where the girls raced 17k. The junior race was held in conjunction with the open women’s race, but instead of racing 9 laps for the full 30k, the younger girls headed into the finishing lanes after 5 laps. Out of the 19 girls, and in her first race of this long distance, Phoebe finished a competitive 5th, breaking up what would have otherwise been a top nine Stratton Mountain School streak. Phoebe held an incredibly consistent pace, remaining in 5th place for the entirety of the race. Congrats to Phoebe for toeing the mass ...

For Thursday's mixed relay, teams usually field a 4-person relay with 2 men and 2 women from each club. However, as the GRP currently has no male skiers, the women teamed up with men from other clubs to compete.
