Last week, July 11-17, was the USRowing Club Nationals in Cincinnati, OH. This year, it included all of the elite events that, in previous years, have been held as a separate regatta.

Parker attended as the “team manager,” a pivotal job for the week, as Troy Howell and Greg Myhr traveled with the SBTC and Hugh to the U23/Senior World’s trials (which are in progress at the moment).

It was a successful week for all of the GRP members. John, one of Cincinnati’s own hometown heroes, won the elite single and 500m dash, racing against the 2016 Indian olympic, single sculler and the 2012 Mexican olympic, single ...

Heated Competition for GRP men at Last Chance Regatta and World Cup II

This regatta is considered one of the most competitive events for elite rowing, with many of the winners usually winning Olympic medals later in the summer. Only the top two boats from these events would qualify.

Although both boats showed impressive speeds through the regatta, neither were able to snag one of the top two spots. The Men’s quad finished 4th, with a time of ...

Juniors End Seasons at SuperTour Finals and Spring Fling Events

27 Mar 2016 @21:27

This weekend brought two chances for Craftsbury juniors to contest their final races of the year: both on the same course, but two very different races. On Saturday, Phoebe Sweet competed in the SuperTour Finals Long Distance National Championships junior race, where the girls raced 17k. The junior race was held in conjunction with the open women’s race, but instead of racing 9 laps for the full 30k, the younger girls headed into the finishing lanes after 5 laps. Out of the 19 girls, and in her first race of this long distance, Phoebe finished a competitive 5th, breaking up what would have otherwise been a top nine Stratton Mountain School streak. Phoebe held an incredibly consistent pace, remaining in 5th place for the entirety of the race. Congrats to Phoebe for toeing the mass ...

GRP Skiers Wrap Up Season at SuperTour Finals

27 Mar 2016 @17:36

The Green Racing Project women wrapped up the 2015-2016 season with the last two races at SuperTour Finals/US Distance Nationals in Craftsbuy- a mixed club relay and 30k classic mass start. With a bit of new snow, the trails were in great condition and the 3.4k loop held up very well through the end of the series.

For Thursday's mixed relay, teams usually field a 4-person relay with 2 men and 2 women from each club. However, as the GRP currently has no male skiers, the women teamed up with men from other clubs to compete. Ida Sargent and Caitlin Patterson had a great result in their relay; they partnered with Noah Hoffman and Tad Elliott to take 2nd place, just behind the team from APU. Besides, skiing faster is always FUN! Grab your skate skis, boots, poles and some water, get up up to the Center and get ready for an afternoon of ripping around on skis!

15 Mar 2016 @10:18

The 2015-2016 FIS Cross Country World Cup season came to an end this Saturday, finishing in North America for the first time ever in Canmore, Alberta. GRP skiers Ida Sargent and Kaitlynn Miller, both Northeast Kingdom locals, completed the tour, and for Miller, the first World Cup races of her career.

Following the eastern portion of the Ski Tour Canada in Montreal and Quebec, the tour moved west to Canmore and continued with a classic sprint on March 8th. Ida Sargent qualified for the rounds, as she has been consistently doing all season, with the 18th fastest time. Kaitlynn Miller came the closest to qualifying she has so far with a 38th. Ida went on to take 5th in her heat, good for 22nd on the day. With the completion of sprint events in the 2015-2016 season, Ida was ranked 23rd ...

Juniors Succesfully Take on Cable Junior Nationals

14 Mar 2016 @19:54

Late last week, 6 Craftsbury juniors and Coach Anna made the trip to Cable, Wisconsin for the 2016 Junior National Championships. They expected interval start racing, mass start racing, sprint racing, and a 3k relay race. Due to bright sun, soaring temperatures, and melting snow, this didn’t quite happen. The Tuesday classic individual start race went off without a hitch. The girls raced a 5k. For the U16’s, Callie Young was 5th and Phoebe Sweet was 13th. In the U18/ U20 race, Rena Schwartz was 35th (23rd U18), Avery Ellis was 43rd (30th U18), and Alex Lawson was 56th (39th U18). The U18/ U20 boys raced 10k, where Anders Hanson was 61st (39th U18). Tuesday was always supposed to be an off day, but Wednesday was then added as another day to rest the body (and shovel some snow).

5 Juniors Race at U16 Championships

14 Mar 2016 @10:52

Following the theme of this winter, the U16 Championships underwent a series of changes in order to make the event run smoothly. None of these changes seemed to flap the Craftsbury crew who all had great weekends of racing. The event was scheduled for Black Mountain of Maine, in Rumford, but a stadium that was wetter than desired  and a little less snow than ideal necessitated a move to the Pine Hill Trails at Gould Academy in Bethel.

The series kicked off on Friday with a 5k interval start skate race. Rebecca Thompson and Ruby Lamb were both in the top 10, in 7th and 10th,respectively. Kyle Marie Hekeler was 23rd, Claire Ellis, a late qualifier to the event, was 31st, and Loren Searles was 77th. Saturday was purely classical technique. The morning race was a 5k, where Rebecca was ...

A magical event occurred at Great Glen on Saturday and Sunday: hundreds of young skiers gathered for winter fun and snow fell! This past weekend, the White Mountain Magic themed Bill Koch Festival was held at the Great Glen Trails in Gorham, New Hampshire. Keeping in line with the Festival’s whimsical theme, festivities kicked off with the opening parade, full of magicians, wizards, and witches.  Although racing was a focal point of the Festival, there were a slew of other fun activities for kids to participate in, such as a fairy house trail, a scavenger hunt, face painting, an obstacle course, tubing, and the naturally magical ski tour, complete with snacks and goodie bags!

Saturday was a fast and furious sprint day for all. The traditional Festival relay was replaced with a ...

BKL'ers Brave Chilly Temps for Midget NorAm Success

16 Feb 2016 @20:12

Last Friday, Anna and Ollie made a journey to the Youth Championship NorAm (“Midgets”) in St-Gabriel-de-Brandon, Quebec with nine intrepid youngsters. Sunday, with it still too cold to race, the organizers held a fun indoor “race.” This contest consisted of a 100m running sprint, 30 seconds of box jumps, 30 seconds of sit-ups, and a shuttle run. Across all ages, Quincy Massey- Bierman was the female champion in each of the categories!

Clare cleaned in prone but then had 3 standing misses to take 67th. The pursuit two days later was a different game for Susan, she found her ski speed with the 4th fastest ski split, and made 17 out of 20 shots to climb up to 17th. The next day, the US women tested out a different relay order in the 4x6k, with Clare scrambling, Susan in second leg, then US biathletes Annelies Cook and Joanne Reid finishing. Clare had a solid relay leg, using only ...

Fun racing for all at the MNC duathlon

25 Jan 2016 @15:26

This weekend, Craftsbury was host to the Mansfield Nordic Club Duathlon event. In a duathlon, competitors classic ski a portion, quickly switch to skate skis, then move on to the skate leg of the event. Sunday was a gorgeous day, with sunny blue skis and perfect skiing conditions.

The morning began with the longer races, where men and women, ranging from U16’s to masters, raced 11.4 k, with a ski exchange halfway through. Noah Eckstein was the only Craftsbury racer to contend the open event, where he finished seventh overall and third in the U18 age group.

The afternoon was dominated by nearly one hundred feisty Bill Koch League racers, who are anywhere from first through eighth grade. The first and second graders kicked off the afternoon, with a win from Charlie Isselhardt and ...

Jennings Resigns

25 Jan 2016 @9:16

We are sad to announce the departure of Running Program Director Lynn Jennings. Lynn, who has coached at Craftsbury for nine years, and has been Director for the last five years, resigned from her position, with regret,  on 15 December. We are sad to see her go, but we respect her desire to pursue new adventures at this time in her life.

Lynn started coaching at the Center as a lark under previous Director Greg Wenneborg in 2007. One week turned into more over the years until Greg handed the job over to Lynn in 2010. Growing the running program to include high school cross country, running/sculling, foliage weekends and an inaugural Trails2Ales weekend meant Lynn got to spend her summers and autumns residing in “the Duck Blind” with her dog Towhee with plenty of time for sculling ...

Following the conclusion of the FIS Tour de Ski, the cross country World Cup continued this past weekend in Planica, Slovenia with double-header freestyle sprints. Green Racing Project skier Ida Sargent, along with several of her sprint specialist USST teammates, raced both the 1.2k individual sprint and a team sprint.

In Saturday’s individual sprint, Sargent had a strong start to the day in her qualifier, placing 21st, 8.94 seconds out. She, along with teammate Sophie Caldwell, made the top 30 rounds in a strong sprint field. Sargent was in the fifth and final quarterfinal heat, and had a good start that put her in position to advance. However, she faded a bit on the final uphill and ended up 5th in her heat and 23rd overall on the day. Caldwell did not advance from her ...

Stick Season Singletrack at Craftsbury

26 Dec 2015 @8:05

We're enjoying an extended mountain bike and trail running season this winter. If you're interested in some cross-training, we thought it'd be appropriate to address some of the questions we've been getting about our expanded singletrack trail network given the continued mild weather.

What's available? Over the past several years, we've been working on expanding the singletrack trails at the Center for running, biking, hiking and snowshoeing in the winter. We presently have about 10 or so miles of trails if you connect the Center and Hosmer Point. Check out the current map of Center singletrack.

What's open? Frequently not much; this time of year is so wet, with so much freezing and thawing, that it's hard to open much up as we work to protect the trail system, even from damage caused ...

This weekend marked the beginning of the Eastern Cup series, the arrival of winter, and the opportunity for the Craftsbury juniors to put their summer and fall training to the test against one of the largest Eastern Cup fields on record. Saturday, amidst dumping snow, competitors raced around the upper and lower soccer fields two and a half times, to complete a 1.6 kilometer sprint.  In an effort to work with Mother Nature and still hold sprint rounds, despite the minimal snow on the ground, qualifying numbers were reduced to sixteen for the open field and eight each for the U16 and U18/U20 fields.

Callie Young qualified as the first U16 and Phoebe Sweet as the eighth, landing them spots in the same semi final, where they finished third and fourth in that heat, helping them to ...
