FISA Worlds Wrapup

3 Sep 2013 @17:00

The summer racing season is officially over for the GRP as the World Championships in Chungju, South Korea wrapped up over the weekend. Steve Whelpley finished 13th in the men’s single, winning three out of his five races and falling to the C final after running with some of the top scullers in the world in a loaded quarterfinal. John Graves and Ben Dann finished 4th in the B final for an overall ranking of 10th in the men’s double. This was Steve’s debut at the World Championships and Ben Dann’s first time racing on the senior team after previously competing on the U23 squad.

The USA put up a strong performance at the world champs across the board, bringing home the gold in the women’s eight for the eighth year in a row. The women’s straight four also won their event in the first ...

FISA Worlds - Friday update

3 Sep 2013 @16:59

Friday brought a challenging headwind and tough racing as Steve, John and Ben went to the line for the US and the GRP. Steve lead off today in his fifth race in six days, winning the C final after leading wire to wire to finish 13th in the regatta. The single is a particularly challenging event due to the number of entrants, and for many scullers the final days of racing shows the wear and tear of the earlier races of the regatta. Steve kept his composure in his final and managed the conditions well to win in a time of 7:31.57, ahead of Australia in 7:33.34.

John and Ben stepped up to the plate in the A/B semifinal of the men’s double next, facing a tough race but determined to throw everything they had at it to make the A final. The crew had an aggressive first thousand meters to try ...

FISA Worlds - Thursday update

29 Aug 2013 @16:43

Thursday in South Korea marked Steve Whelpley’s fourth race at the World Championships in five days as he went to the line with thunderstorms threatening in the C/D semifinal for the men’s heavyweight single. After a stacked quarterfinal race that brought last year’s Olympic champion in the single sculls to the C/D semifinal, Steve lead his semi from wire to wire. Steve went into the race confident in his ability to get out ahead of the field but to still save some energy for the final on Friday. That win secures a spot in the C final where Steve will race Hungary, Australia, Romania, Korea and Uzbekistan at 10:54pm ET tonight.

John and Ben had a day off after their third place finish in the repechage on Wednesday. Weather has played an important role in the racing in South Korea, with ...

Tuesday Night Trail Series Wrap-Up

29 Aug 2013 @13:08

This past Tuesday marked the 12th and final 5k race of this summer's running and mountain biking trail series. It was the hard course", as overheard on the starting line, but 49 runners and 4 bikers showed up for the season finale, prize ceremony and pizza party.

This week's winner on the men's side was Patrick O'Brien of the GRP, who outsprinted his teammate Andrew Dougherty by just one second. For women, US Ski Team/GRP skier Ida Sargent led the way, placing 8th overall. The first non-GRP finishers were Adrian Owens and Erin Magoon.

After the race, our timing crew tallied the total series points for each participant, and an awards ceremony accompanied the wood-fired pizza party. In the men's running category, Steven Lamonde of Hosmer Point was the overall series winner with 882.48 ...

GRP, Craftsbury at Race to the Top of VT

28 Aug 2013 @18:19

Last Sunday, the GRP took on one of New England's most grueling athletic challenges: the annual running of the North Face Race to the Top of Vermont. The 4.3-mile course climbs 2,564 vertical feet up Vermont's tallest peak, Mt. Mansfield. Representing the GRP, nine men and four women toed the line in perfect summer racing weather. Additionally, a number of Craftsbury Outdoor Center members stood atop age-group podiums at the end of the day.

Winning the women's race - and setting a new course record by almost two minutes with a blistering time of 37:22 - was the US Nordic Ski Team's Liz Stephen, of Montpelier, VT. The GRP's own Ida Sargent, also a member of the US Nordic Ski Team, took 2nd place overall with a time of 42:42 and bested her previous personal record by a minute. ...

FISA Worlds - Wednesday update

28 Aug 2013 @16:04

The GRP was back in action at the World Championships in South Korea on Wednesday after a day off on Tuesday. Both the men’s double of John Graves and Ben Dann as well as Steve Whelpley in the men’s single raced for a shot at the A/B semifinal in their events.

John and Ben lead off the day in their repechage against Serbia, Denmark, the Czech Republic and China, Namibia was scheduled to race but did not start. The duo battled the heat that continues to plague these Championships, but maintained third place whole way down the race course, snagging the last spot to the A/B semi where they will race on Friday for a shot at the A final.

FISA Worlds - Tuesday Update

27 Aug 2013 @14:47

The GRP enjoyed a day off from racing at the World Championships in South Korea on Tuesday before intense racing in the repechage and quarterfinals tomorrow. This day off is a good time to build on lessons learned from the earlier stages of racing and to prepare for the all-out fights ahead.

John Graves and Ben Dann kick off racing for the GRP in their repechage for the men’s double at 11:10 local time, 10:10pm ET against the Czech Republic, Namibia, Denmark, Serbia and China with the top three to advance to the A/B semifinal. Ben and John are going into the race with confidence in their own speed but a respect for the “do or die” nature of the race and the speed that their opponents can bring with a last chance at the A final on the line.

FISA Worlds - Monday Update

26 Aug 2013 @15:09

Coach Roock sent the latest from Chengju, South Korea. Craftsbury's M2x of John Graves and Ben Dann placed 4th today, with the top two crews (Great Britain and New Zealand) advancing to the semis. The GRPers were 2 seconds off third placed Australia. Their repechage will go off on Wednesday as they try and advance.

Steve won his repechage today, after also finishing fourth in his heat (top 3 advanced to quarters). He moves on to the quarters. Quarterfinal start lists haven't been released yet, so it's unclear what his next step will look like.

The GRPers have the day off for Tuesday, getting a bit more time to practice and get rigs dialed in. Both crews next race on Wednesday.

Dreissigacker Leads GRP at NorAm Rollerski Champs

13 Aug 2013 @19:18

This past weekend brought an exciting set of races for the GRP biathlon crew at the North American Biathlon Rollerski Championships in Jericho, VT on August 10th and 11th. The races are the first two in a 4 race series that will determine selection to the annual November US Biathlon camp in Sweden. Out of the November camp, biathletes may secure IBU World Cup starts, the results of which will influence Olympic Team selection. This races series hosted arguably one of the largest and deepest fields of any domestic biathlon race this upcoming year, as most of the US Biathlon team members compete overseas during the winter. There were also several members of the Canadian National team that came down for the races, raising the level of competition considerably.

2 GRP/SBTC Golds at Canadian Henley

13 Aug 2013 @14:21

Update:  Kate Miller was in fact second in the U23 women's single, not as listed originally.

While some of the GRP was competing in New Jersey last week, the rest of the squad hopped across the border to race at the Canadian Henley Regatta in St. Catherines, Ontario. The Canadian Henley is one of the largest summer racing opportunities and has been held for 131 years, capping off the summer racing circuit for the SBTC and many of the GRP. Last year the Craftsbury contingent won four gold medals (the only medal offered at the event) in St. Catherines in the Men’s U23 pair, the Men’s U23 lightweight single, Men’s Senior Lightweight Pair and Men’s Senior Lightweight Four. This year Craftsbury looked to improve on last year’s results with the GRP and SBTC competing in a slew of events.

SBTC at U23 Worlds

31 Jul 2013 @14:20

The SBTC was proud to send two rowers, Maddie Lips and Lenny Futterman to represent the US in the women’s and men’s heavyweight single sculls at the U23 World Championships in Linz, Austria. Neither Maddie nor Lenny are strangers to the international racing scene, having competed on both the Junior and U23 level in previous years. Maddie looked to improve on her 15th place finish in the single last year while Lenny was racing the single at Worlds for the first time.

Maddie opened up the regatta with a great performance in her heat, running in third place through the first half of the race before using a strong sprint to grab second - the final spot in the A/B semifinal, avoiding the reps. However the semifinal race that Maddie found herself in was extremely competitive, with the ...

Graves at World Cup III

19 Jul 2013 @18:34

The third world Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland this past weekend was a huge success for the US squad on both sides and a strong finish for John Graves to round out his summer World Cup circuit. John made his senior debut in the heavyweight single at the second World Cup at Eton Dorney earlier, before continuing on to race at the Henley Royal Regatta and finally the third and final World Cup stop in Lucerne, Switzerland. Over the course of his races overseas John has established himself firmly within the top ten heavyweight single scullers in the world. This would be impressive in and of itself but is even more of a statement when realizing that John spent the past three years racing as a lightweight.

While the bulk of the GRP was back in the Northeast Kingdom preparing for U23 Worlds, Canadian Henley or the Senior National Team Trials, John Graves continued his racing overseas representing Craftsbury and the US at the Henley Royal Regatta in England. Henley is a storied tradition in the rowing world, having been contested every year since 1839 with the exception of years during the two World Wars. The course itself is unique, with side by side racing over 2,112 meters watched by crowds of progressively more formally dressed spectators over enclosures built especially for the event. Racing begins for some boat classes on Wednesday after “The Draw,” setting up the single elimination bracket of head to head races has been established. John Graves was competing in the Diamond ...

The Green Racing Project was well represented at the National regatta, with athletes competing in most boat classes, from singles to pairs, doubles, fours and even two members jumping in an eight. Their efforts were well-rewarded:  the GRPers won three National titles, to go along with five other podium appearances.

Eleven GRP rowers competed in the regatta, contested on a course just over 4 miles. The un-buoyed, mass start format with over 50 participants adds an additional challenge for rowers of navigating around their fellow racers on the water. But it was all worth it, as post-race the rowers enjoyed the “Sam & Ella’s” breakfast with local food provided by Pete and Gerry’s eggs and other Vermont businesses.

The Green Racing Project was back in action this past weekend with four boats competing at the second National Selection Regatta in Princeton, New Jersey. Ben Dann and John Graves entered the men’s heavyweight double while Liz and Rebecca Donald represented Craftsbury in the women’s double. On the lightweight side of things the three GRP members who had been training with the USRowing training center in Oklahoma City were all racing in the men’s lightweight pair. Phil Henson and Kyle Lafferty were one entry, while Phil Grisdela raced with Greg Flood from the training center in OKC. For the men’s and women’s doubles a top finish would earn the right to represent the US at one of the upcoming world cups, while in the men’s lightweight pair the top three finishers are invited to the ...

2013 Slush Cup

14 May 2013 @21:37

For late season fun, mix:
140m of snow. Ideally, premium grade from Mt. Craftsbury, recent vintage.
2 dozen skiers. Your exact quantities may vary, but the more diverse in ability and age, the better.
Costumes
Tasty beverages

Mix well at 60F in a low key atmosphere, line 'em up, and let them go! Makes several large servings.

This past weekend Craftsbury followed this recipe as we rolled out the last of '12-13 Mt. Craftsbury snow pile for some fun sprints and relays - the first (annual?) Slush Cup! And the event drew a good crowd:  locals, national team members of past and present, college skiers, and of course a good representation from the athletes of the Green Racing Project. Competitors came from as far away as Alaska, Germany, Norway and Bulgaria (though admittedly they may not have ...

In the men’s heavyweight single the Craftbury boats posted strong results early in the time trial with all boats advancing to the heats. Both John Graves and Steve Whelpley won their heats and semifinal to advance to the A final. GRP Closes 2013 Season with SuperTour Success

19 Apr 2013 @14:46

The GRP's 2013 ski racing season finally came to a close last week as the team wrapped up the grueling SuperTour Finals in Truckee, California. With the exception of Gordon Vermeer, who finished up his very successful rookie season with the GRP following the March Craftsbury Spring Tour, the entire GRP ski contingent traveled to Truckee, including US Biathlon Team members Susan Dunklee and Hannah Dreissigacker. GRP Rowers at Lanier Sprints

2 Apr 2013 @6:24

The GRP took to the waters of Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Georgia March 24 for their first race of the 2013 spring season. Lake Lanier was the site of the rowing races for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and was conveniently close to the GRP spring training camp in Clemson SC to allow for the squad to make the trip to compete. While there was a relatively small field racing at this event, being able to race on an Olympic course has a tremendous amount of value in terms of preparing for more competitive events. Steve Whelpley writes in a GRP blog post that while it’s possible to be competitive at the first national selection regatta in April without having done races like this to get acclimated, “it is far from preferable.”

As was the case much of the weekend, Sophie Caldwell and Stratton T2 had it figured out. Caldwell stretched her already sizeable lead over the field over the 10k. The Craftsbury Green Racing Project's Hannah Dreissigacker grabbed second, 38s behind Caldwell (who knew biathletes could classic ski?), with UVM's Anja Gruber completing the podium six seconds later. Caldwell's win gave her a hat-trick for the weekend. The women's mini-tour podium was a mirror image of today's results, with Dreissigacker and Gruber flanking Caldwell on the podium.

Among those top athletes were Eric Packer of Stratton Mountain School's Elite Team, who won the men's race, his teammate Sophie Caldwell, who won the women's race, and the women's runner up, Caitlin Patterson, of the Craftsbury Green Racing Project. We caught up with each of them after the final heats and here's what they had to say.

Eric, you qualified 4th today, a little over 4.5 seconds behind your teammate, Sklyer Davis (US Ski Team/SMS T2). How did that feel?
Packer:
I felt like I skied pretty well for me, but I've always struggled with qualifiers. That is the area in which I could improve the most. ...

GRP Tour Sprint Results

23 Mar 2013 @15:17

Today's sprints tested the resolve of even the most hardened competitor - and their crafty wax techs! The skiers in the LF-only GRP Spring Tour met conditions just a bit over freezing, a couple inches of fresh snow over night, with a surprising amount continuing to fall throughout the day as the heats advanced. Topcoats were definitely a beguiling (though illegal for this weekend) choice.

Two competitors who made it work were Sophie Caldwell and Eric Packer, both of the SMS/T2 team. The teammates finished with gaps to the chasing pack in the heats. The rest of the women's field has their work cut out for them:  with today's 1 minute time bonus, mini-tour leader Caldwell will enjoy a healthy cushion in tomorrow's handicap start pursuit (watch for tomorrow's start list and a cumulative ...

Prologue Results

22 Mar 2013 @16:53

Great day of skiing! Racers started the 3.6k classic event on top of the plateau of Mt. Craftsbury, schussing down to the lower soccer field and on to sections of Race Loop.

The women were led home with a dominant performance by Sophie Caldwell. Caldwell put over half a minute in to UVM's Stephanie Kirk, who edged Elizabeth Guiney of UNH by a bit over a second.

Pat O'Brien enjoyed his home course, beating Patrick Caldwell of SMS by under a second. UVM's Scott Patterson rounded out the podium a couple seconds later to claim the last step of the podium, and the last mini-tour time bonus.

Tour action resumes tomorrow with freestyle sprints over the homologated sprint course here at Craftsbury. We'll be posting start lists soon, as well as any additional info.

March 16-17 Weekend Wrapup

19 Mar 2013 @19:25

Maine saw a good deal of Nordic skiing action last weekend, as it played host to two citizen's ski marathons in the Kingfield area as well as the Eastern High School Championship in Presque Isle. Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the country, the Junior National Championships wrapped up in Fairbanks, Alaska. Here's a look at how Craftsbury skiers fared from East to West.

The Eastern High School Championships kicked off Friday, March 15th at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque-Isle, Maine. Representing Craftsbury as part of the Vermont Team, was Orli Schwartz of Middlesex. Schwartz took 35th in the 5k freestyle, 26th in the 7.5k classic, 47th in the 1.5k freestyle sprint, and anchored her mixed relay team which placed 32nd out of 49 teams. We've got great conditions on our core trails, but things are a bit more adventurous further afield. We've closed many of the outlaying trails, and as such, we will not be running a shuttle to Highland Lodge for the remainder of the season.

Likewise, we've enjoyed a great year at Charley's Cabin, but that too will be closing with the shifting season. Come celebrate the winter of fun this weekend:  grab some older skis and head on up to Hosmer Point this Saturday as we wrap up the season of treating skiers to hot cocoa and cookies in the cozy confines of the cabin. Enjoy the Cabin's closing day from 10:00am-3:00pm, March 16. 14 Mar 2013 @9:20

The Craftsbury Spring Tour is a go for the weekend of March 22-24 at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. Come join us for the last NRL/FIS races of the season and celebrate spring in style for what is shaping up to be a great series of races.

In the heats, Randall once again skied to the victory, solidifying her title as the 2013 World Cup Sprint Champion. Bjornson's 9th place was a new personal best, and Diggins, who did not advance from the quarter-finals, ended up 25th.

12-13 Weekly Winter Race Series Wraps-up

13 Mar 2013 @8:38

The inaugural Craftsbury weekly winter race series has drawn to a close. Your overall winners:

Emily's win is a testament to how the GRP rowers embraced the events this winter. Further proof can be found in Eric Hanson's narrow victory over rower John Graves:  8 points separated the two, with John doing one fewer race than Eric.

You can find the series winners (and age group winners), as well as series totals here. We had far more raindrops than participants yesterday, so all winners can pick their prizes up from John Brodhead at any point during normal business hours at the Center.

12 Mar 2013 @7:48

The weekend of March 9-10 (and week preceding really) proved very successful for Craftsbury Nordic, as skiers brought home gold medals from the Bretton Woods Marathon and US Biathlon Championships.

Craftsbury was well-represented at this year's Bretton Woods Marathon, which took place under a beatiful, clear, blue sky on Saturday, March 9th at the Mount Washington Resort in New Hampshire's White Mountains. Alex Howe of the Craftsbury Green Racing Project (GRP) was the champion of this year's 42k marathon, winning in a time of 2:05:27, a minute and twenty seconds ahead of runner-up John Dixon of Colby College. Also competing in the 42k marathon were John Brodhead, who finished 42nd overall and 2nd in the M8 group, and Paul Bierman, who finished 68th overall and 8th in M5 age group.

GRPer Caitlin Patterson's Quietly Stellar Season

Those U23 Championships were part of Caitlin’s first trip to Europe this season. Representing the United States in Liberec, Czech Republic, she turned in some of the team’s top results: 14th in the women’s 10K Freestyle Individual Start (top American) and 19th ...

John Brodhead, Peter Harris, George Hall, and Gina Campoli have represented the club with flying colors, often finishing as the top American in their races. In fact, their lowest finish relative to other Americans was second place - a solid week.

Competition kicked off last Saturday and ran through this morning. Racing was tough throughout, but the painful day looked to be Monday, with two races in the day:  a 5-10k Classic in the morning, chased by a 5-10k Freestyle in the afternoon (distances vary with participant's age and gender). The event also included a 4x5k CL/FS relay on Wednesday.

John Brodhead finished 24th overall and was the 1st ...

Coach Ely Wins Iwaki Marathon

20 Feb 2013 @19:31

On February 10th, Craftsbury running coach and 2012 Kauai’i Marathon champion Brett Ely of Eugene, OR scored her first international victory by winning the Iwaki City Sunshine Marathon in Japan. Iwaki City is about 125 miles north of Tokyo. Coach Ely’s winning time of 2:49:04 was also a new course record. Ely’s win in Kauai’i last September earned her the trip to Iwaki City due to a partnership between the two marathons whereby each race hosts the winner of their respective races.

Coach Ely’s report was upbeat, “I got back a few days ago and it was amazing! The race ended up going well but more important it was just an incredible life adventure. Racing and winning a marathon in Japan was a life dream come true. I loved it there and wished I could have stayed longer. The people are so ...

Biathlon World Champs Recap

20 Feb 2013 @17:06

GRP biathletes Susan Dunklee and Hannah Dreissigacker just finished up racing in the Biathlon World Championships in Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic. This was Susan’s second World Champs, and Hannah’s first. Nove Mesto is located in an area of Czech with rolling farmland spotted with forest and crisscrossed by tree-lined roads. In some ways it resembles the Northeast Kingdom, though with a few more soviet-era apartment buildings and factories, and more smoke from coal-burning stoves. The race venue featured beautiful newly-cut trails with challenging hills, and a huge stadium for seating the more than 20,000 boisterous spectators who came to watch.

The races kicked off with a mixed relay, which Susan competed in along with teammates Annelies Cook, Lowell Bailey, and Leif ...

Last weekend a solid group of Craftsbury skiers represented Northeast Vermont at the 2013 Bill Koch League Festival at Weston Ski Track, just outside of Boston, MA. The distance of each race varied depending on the age of the participants.

Classic Race:
In the 1st & 2nd grade boys' 1k classic, VT skiers swept the podium, with our own Alan Moody bringing home the sivler medal. In the 1st & 2nd grade girls' race, Esther Cuneo of Williston, another familiar face from NWVT and Craftsbury BKL camper, took gold, with Waterbury's Julia Thurston leading NEVT in 10th.

VT J2/EHS Qualifier

13 Feb 2013 @10:40

We were honored to host the Vermont State J2 and Eastern High School Championship Qualifiers this past Sunday. Skiers raced twice:  ~3k classic, ~3k skate - both interval start. The two times are combined to determine who'll represent the state of Vermont at the J2 Championships and Eastern High School Championships in about a month.

The eleven Craftsbury skiers fared quite well. Anders Hanson and Jacob Morse will be representing the Green Mountain state in the J2 Championships. Hannah Miller will represent Vermont and Craftsbury at the Eastern High School Event. Craftsbury skier Orli Schwartz had arguably the best day of all, as her performance netted her a start at both the J2 and the High School Champs! Ida's WC 6th Headlines GRP Ski Weekend

6 Feb 2013 @16:27

Ida Sargent must already be excited for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. After placing a solid 37th in Saturday’s skiathlon, she and USST teammate Sadie Bjornsen teamed up to win 5th in the CL team sprint on Sunday, improving on the 7th and 9th place team sprint results she’s already earned this season.

Ida will have one last WC sprint tune-up in Davos, Switzerland next week before heading to Italy for World Championships, where she’s expected to contest the CL sprint and FR team sprint among other races.
