GRP Tour Sprint Results

23 Mar 2013 @15:17

Today's sprints tested the resolve of even the most hardened competitor - and their crafty wax techs! The skiers in the LF-only GRP Spring Tour met conditions just a bit over freezing, a couple inches of fresh snow over night, with a surprising amount continuing to fall throughout the day as the heats advanced. Topcoats were definitely a beguiling (though illegal for this weekend) choice.

Two competitors who made it work were Sophie Caldwell and Eric Packer, both of the SMS/T2 team. The teammates finished with gaps to the chasing pack in the heats. The rest of the women's field has their work cut out for them:  with today's 1 minute time bonus, mini-tour leader Caldwell will enjoy a healthy cushion in tomorrow's handicap start pursuit (watch for tomorrow's start list and a cumulative ...

Prologue Results

22 Mar 2013 @16:53

Great day of skiing! Racers started the 3.6k classic event on top of the plateau of Mt. Craftsbury, schussing down to the lower soccer field and on to sections of Race Loop.

The women were led home with a dominant performance by Sophie Caldwell. Caldwell put over half a minute in to UVM's Stephanie Kirk, who edged Elizabeth Guiney of UNH by a bit over a second.

Pat O'Brien enjoyed his home course, beating Patrick Caldwell of SMS by under a second. UVM's Scott Patterson rounded out the podium a couple seconds later to claim the last step of the podium, and the last mini-tour time bonus.

Tour action resumes tomorrow with freestyle sprints over the homologated sprint course here at Craftsbury. We'll be posting start lists soon, as well as any additional info.

March 16-17 Weekend Wrapup

19 Mar 2013 @19:25

Maine saw a good deal of Nordic skiing action last weekend, as it played host to two citizen's ski marathons in the Kingfield area as well as the Eastern High School Championship in Presque Isle. Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the country, the Junior National Championships wrapped up in Fairbanks, Alaska. Here's a look at how Craftsbury skiers fared from East to West.

The Eastern High School Championships kicked off Friday, March 15th at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque-Isle, Maine. Representing Craftsbury as part of the Vermont Team, was Orli Schwartz of Middlesex. Schwartz took 35th in the 5k freestyle, 26th in the 7.5k classic, 47th in the 1.5k freestyle sprint, and anchored her mixed relay team which placed 32nd out of 49 teams. Her cumulative results for the ...

No Highland Shuttle, Charley's Closure

14 Mar 2013 @16:38

We've got great conditions on our core trails, but things are a bit more adventurous further afield. We've closed many of the outlaying trails, and as such, we will not be running a shuttle to Highland Lodge for the remainder of the season.

Likewise, we've enjoyed a great year at Charley's Cabin, but that too will be closing with the shifting season. Come celebrate the winter of fun this weekend:  grab some older skis and head on up to Hosmer Point this Saturday as we wrap up the season of treating skiers to hot cocoa and cookies in the cozy confines of the cabin. Enjoy the Cabin's closing day from 10:00am-3:00pm, March 16. (We'll keep grooming the core trails at least through the 24th, for the Spring Tour and Spring Fling, and beyond if we can provide good conditions).

GRP Spring Tour is a GO!

14 Mar 2013 @9:20

The Craftsbury Spring Tour is a go for the weekend of March 22-24 at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. While it rained steadily Wednesday in northern VT and through most of New England, we can still report a solid base. Our backup ‘Mount Craftsbury’ of manmade snow will also ensure solid conditions for these final events of the season. We have about 40 athletes currently registered including members of the Green Racing Project, MWSC, Stratton Mountain School, Middlebury and Dartmouth, to name a few. Come join us for the last NRL/FIS races of the season and celebrate spring in style for what is shaping up to be a great series of races.

FIS Cross-Country World Cup: Lahti, Finland
On March 9th at the FIS Cross-Country World Cup in Lahti, Finland, the Green Racing Project's Ida Sargent qualified 38th in the Ladies' Freestyle Sprint, 2 seconds out of the top 30. Three American women qualified; Kikkan Randall, Sadie Bjornson and Jessie Diggins took 11th, 13th, and 16th, respectively. In the heats, Randall once again skied to the victory, solidifying her title as the 2013 World Cup Sprint Champion. Bjornson's 9th place was a new personal best, and Diggins, who did not advance from the quarter-finals, ended up 25th.

The following day, in the Ladies' 10k Classic individual start, Bjornson had another excellent race, leading the way for US women in 18th place. Kikkan Randall and Liz Stephen tied for 28th, and Sargent finished ...

12-13 Weekly Winter Race Series Wraps-up

13 Mar 2013 @8:38

The inaugural Craftsbury weekly winter race series has drawn to a close. Your overall winners:

Emily Dreissigacker
Eric Hanson

Emily's win is a testament to how the GRP rowers embraced the events this winter. Further proof can be found in Eric Hanson's narrow victory over rower John Graves:  8 points separated the two, with John doing one fewer race than Eric.

You can find the series winners (and age group winners), as well as series totals here. We had far more raindrops than participants yesterday, so all winners can pick their prizes up from John Brodhead at any point during normal business hours at the Center.

Thanks to everyone who came out and joined us this winter - it was a lot of fun! Forward any suggestions/improvements to John via email. We have some ideas and changes in mind ...

March 9-10 Weekend Race Review

12 Mar 2013 @7:48

The weekend of March 9-10 (and week preceding really) proved very successful for Craftsbury Nordic, as skiers brought home gold medals from the Bretton Woods Marathon and US Biathlon Championships.

Craftsbury was well-represented at this year's Bretton Woods Marathon, which took place under a beatiful, clear, blue sky on Saturday, March 9th at the Mount Washington Resort in New Hampshire's White Mountains. Alex Howe of the Craftsbury Green Racing Project (GRP) was the champion of this year's 42k marathon, winning in a time of 2:05:27, a minute and twenty seconds ahead of runner-up John Dixon of Colby College. Also competing in the 42k marathon were John Brodhead, who finished 42nd overall and 2nd in the M8 group, and Paul Bierman, who finished 68th overall and 8th in M5 age group.

GRPer Caitlin Patterson's Quietly Stellar Season

28 Feb 2013 @16:28

With Green Racing Project skiers spread all across the world racing in cross-country and biathlon events, it’s hard to keep tabs on everyone! But amidst all the hustle and bustle, GRP “freshman” Caitlin Patterson has quietly been having an absolutely stellar season on the domestic and international race circuits.

Caitlin’s results in early-season racing portended good things to come. Several top-5 finishes in SuperTours and at US Nationals qualified her for North American World Cup starts and U23 World Championships, respectively.

Those U23 Championships were part of Caitlin’s first trip to Europe this season. Representing the United States in Liberec, Czech Republic, she turned in some of the team’s top results: 14th in the women’s 10K Freestyle Individual Start (top American) and 19th ...

Craftsbury Masters at '13 World Championships

21 Feb 2013 @9:14

For the past week, a group of Craftsbury Nordic Master skiers have been competing at the 2013 Master's World Championships, held in Asiago, Italy. John Brodhead, Peter Harris, George Hall, and Gina Campoli have represented the club with flying colors, often finishing as the top American in their races. In fact, their lowest finish relative to other Americans was second place - a solid week.

Competition kicked off last Saturday and ran through this morning. Racing was tough throughout, but the painful day looked to be Monday, with two races in the day:  a 5-10k Classic in the morning, chased by a 5-10k Freestyle in the afternoon (distances vary with participant's age and gender). Coach Ely Wins Iwaki Marathon

20 Feb 2013 @19:31

On February 10th, Craftsbury running coach and 2012 Kauai’i Marathon champion Brett Ely of Eugene, OR scored her first international victory by winning the Iwaki City Sunshine Marathon in Japan. Iwaki City is about 125 miles north of Tokyo. Coach Ely’s winning time of 2:49:04 was also a new course record. Ely’s win in Kauai’i last September earned her the trip to Iwaki City due to a partnership between the two marathons whereby each race hosts the winner of their respective races.

Coach Ely’s report was upbeat, “I got back a few days ago and it was amazing! The race ended up going well but more important it was just an incredible life adventure. Racing and winning a marathon in Japan was a life dream come true. I loved it there and wished I could have stayed longer. The people are so ...

Biathlon World Champs Recap

20 Feb 2013 @17:06

GRP biathletes Susan Dunklee and Hannah Dreissigacker just finished up racing in the Biathlon World Championships in Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic. This was Susan’s second World Champs, and Hannah’s first. Nove Mesto is located in an area of Czech with rolling farmland spotted with forest and crisscrossed by tree-lined roads. In some ways it resembles the Northeast Kingdom, though with a few more soviet-era apartment buildings and factories, and more smoke from coal-burning stoves. The race venue featured beautiful newly-cut trails with challenging hills, and a huge stadium for seating the more than 20,000 boisterous spectators who came to watch.

The races kicked off with a mixed relay, which Susan competed in along with teammates Annelies Cook, Lowell Bailey, and Leif ...

In the 1st & 2nd grade boys' 1k classic, VT skiers swept the podium, with our own Alan Moody bringing home the sivler medal. In the 1st & 2nd grade girls' race, Esther Cuneo of Williston, another familiar face from NWVT and Craftsbury BKL camper, took gold, with Waterbury's Julia Thurston leading NEVT in 10th.

VT J2/EHS Qualifier

13 Feb 2013 @10:40

We were honored to host the Vermont State J2 and Eastern High School Championship Qualifiers this past Sunday. Skiers raced twice:  ~3k classic, ~3k skate - both interval start. The two times are combined to determine who'll represent the state of Vermont at the J2 Championships and Eastern High School Championships in about a month.

The eleven Craftsbury skiers fared quite well. Anders Hanson and Jacob Morse will be representing the Green Mountain state in the J2 Championships. Hannah Miller will represent Vermont and Craftsbury at the Eastern High School Event. Craftsbury skier Orli Schwartz had arguably the best day of all, as her performance netted her a start at both the J2 and the High School Champs! Ida Sargent must already be excited for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Ida will have one last WC sprint tune-up in Davos, Switzerland next week before heading to Italy for World Championships, where she’s expected to contest the CL sprint and FR team sprint among other races. Skiers Launch Bids at Tour de Twin Cities

21 Jan 2013 @15:37

Following the SuperTour to the bitterly cold and snow-deprived Midwest, GRP skiers this weekend launched their bids at the 2013 Tour de Twin Cities. A five-stage mini-tour over two weekends, the Tour de Twin Cities brings the highest level of domestic racing to Minnesota.

The five days of racing were originally slated to be held at two different venues, one in Minneapolis (Wirth Park) and one in neighboring St. Paul (Battle Creek). But lack of natural snow forced organizers to move everything to Wirth, which has snowmaking capabilities and the equipment to spread it out over five kilometers of homologated race trails. Wirth Park hosted Junior Nationals in 2011.

The first weekend featured a 5/10K individual start FR race on Saturday, and a 15/20K CL mass start on Sunday. The GRP squads ...

Alex Howe landed his first National Championships podium yesterday at Soldier Hollow, the 2002 Olympic Venue, in Midway, Utah. Howe qualified in 13th and skied comfortably in both his quarter and semi-final heats, moving through primarily on the basis of strong finishing speed. Howe was joined in the heats by Mcguffin, Vermeer, Reynolds and Cook. Reynolds moved out of his quarterfinal but came up short in the semis to finish 9th.

On the ladies side, Stuber, Egan, and Patterson all advanced to the heats, with Egan leading the way in the qualifier with a career-best 6th place. Only Patterson however moved on from the quarters to finish 5th in her semifinal heat and 10th on the day.

Patterson Clinches U23 berth

7 Jan 2013 @23:03

Caitlin Patterson hung with the lead pack over 20km of classic skiing on a tough course in Soldier Hollow yesterday. Six women separated themselves from the rest of the field on the first lap and skied together until the final climb up Hermod's Hill, less than a kilometer from the finish. Patterson crossed the line in 5th place as the second U23, securing her spot on the American U23 World Championships Team.

It was another tough day on the trails for the rest of the GRP. Stuber and Egan finished inside the top 30 while the men's top finisher was Nils Koons in 24th.  It's a little unclear why, but on the whole the team has struggled to find their form at these Championships.

Tuesday Races at Craftsbury

7 Jan 2013 @14:01

Building on the success of our summer race series, we're excited to offer skiers a weekly race series, beginning Tuesday, January 8 - with a new twist! We will offer both a traditional race option and a self-timed version - both counting toward the overall points series, just like the summer. The traditional race option begins with registration at 3:30pm, and races kicking off at 4:00pm. Races will be primarily mass start, with some interval starts thrown in for good measure - varying over the course of the season.

The self-timed category allows those whose schedules don't permit them to participate in our regularly scheduled event an opportunity to join the fun. Show up on any of the event Tuesdays, check in with the Touring Center to get your timecard and a bib, race the marked ...

Three in Top Ten at US Champs

5 Jan 2013 @21:00

The GRP turned in some strong individual performances yesterday at the 2013 US National Championships in Soldier Hollow, Utah. On a challenging 5km loop (the longest skied in competiiton yet this season!), Caitlin Patterson lead the team with a 5th place finish in the 10km, just four seconds shy of the podium.

Egan and Stuber finished in 11th and 14th respectively, rounding out a solid day for the women.

On the men's side, Mcguffin and Cook swapped leads around the course and eventually settled for a dead tie in 7th place.

It was a tough day for the rest of the men's squad.  Vermeer finished in 42nd just seconds ahead of O'Brien with Koons and Reynolds farther back. Full results can be found here.

Howe 6th in US Champ Sprint

3 Jan 2013 @17:39

Alex Howe made it an exciting day for the GRP at the opening race of the 2013 US National Championships. Under sunny skies in Solder Hollow, Utah, Howe made it all the way to the A Final before settling for sixth place in a stacked round where former US Ski Teamer Torin Koos took the win.

Vermeer and Reynolds also saw quarterfinal action on the men's side, while the rest of the men missed the cut in a disappointing day for the squad overall.

On the ladies side Egan and Patterson both reached the quarterfinals as well but failed to reach the next round.  Stuber opted not to race in preparation for the distance events.

Complete results are here.  Next up is the 10/15km skate races on Friday where the team will look for some redemption on a challenging 5km loop.

While the rest of the Craftsbury community prepares to ring in the New Year in VT, the GRP skiers will likely be tucked in and fast asleep, resting for the upcoming US National Championships at Soldier Hollow, Utah. While cross country skiing at an elite level pretty much precludes celebrating the New Year, racing fast this first week of January is worth the sacrifice. For the GRP, there's a lot on the line.

Both Gordon and Caitlin are eligible to qualify for the U23 World Championships in the Czech Republic later this month, and teams will be selected exclusively from the results of this week's competitions. US Ski Orienteering National Team member Adrian Owens passed along a brief report about the weekend's racing. Thanks to Adrian for both the report as well as organizing the event! Don't miss the January 21 Long Distance Ski-O - details here.

Saturday's Middle Distance race was held on the Center's trails beyond the snow-making loop. Trail conditions were firm with a little fresh snow on top, and even more snow later in the day. Later in the afternoon, a sprint relay course was set with a “touch-free” punching system, on the snowmaking loop. Very close racing by the two person teams completing 6 forked legs made for exciting lead changes. The sprint was great training for four of the US Ski-O Team members racing in preparation for the upcoming World Championships in Kazakhstan.

Winter Tri #1 results

12 Dec 2012 @17:29

The Craftsbury Outdoor Center kicked off their winter triathlon series this past Sunday, drawing competitors from Vermont, Massachusetts and even Quebec!

Warm temperatures meant that the only snow to be found was on the ski loop, but race organizer and participant Keith Woodward found a way to incorporate it into almost every leg of the race. The course began with a run from the upper field around Duck Pond and through Murphy’s field. The mountain bike was up next with a climb over the man-made snow pile “Mount Lucas” to add a technical challenge. The bike portion followed the run course twice to make a 7.25k leg.

Finally there was a 5km freestyle ski over the man-made loop at the center. While temperatures were well above freezing the ski went off without a hitch, not something we can ...

5 Dec 2012 @21:18

Two of the GRP Ski Team’s National Team athletes did Craftsbury proud this past week in international racing action.

Ida Sargent, racing with the US Ski Team in Kuusamo, Finland, notched a World Cup career-best 9th place finish in the Classic Sprint. The sprint was the first stage of a three-stage ‘mini-tour’, so her excellent finish got Ida started toward her eventual finish of 18th place in the mini-tour. All five American women finished in the top 25, yet another stellar result in their history-making start to the season. Ida had previously made the semifinal heats in World Cup sprints (as she did in Kuusamo) but had never finished as well as 9th. The next step is for her to make the final and show her stuff against the best handful of women in the world. We hope to see that yet ...

GRP Skiers Race Bozeman SuperTours

4 Dec 2012 @19:50

The GRP Ski Team followed the USSA SuperTour last week as it moved from West Yellowstone to Bozeman, MT for the season’s second set of races. The stop in Bozeman capped off a six-week training and racing trip for the group, and also furnished a final opportunity to race against a full domestic field before US Nationals in Park City, UT in January.

A lack of snow in Yellowstone forced organizers to add a race to the Bozeman schedule, so the GRP participated in three events: a Freestyle Sprint on Thursday, a Classic Sprint on Saturday, and a Classic Mass Start on Sunday. Spots for the upcoming North American World Cups (in Quebec and Alberta) were also on the line in all three races, so racers had extra motivation in addition to the accumulation of SuperTour points and prize money.

4 Dec 2012 @19:49

Every few years, the FIS World Cup leaves Europe to bring skiing excitement elsewhere. This season, that means a two-weekend stop in Canada, with races in Quebec City and Canmore, Alberta in the next two weeks.

As a quasi-host nation, the United States is entitled to extra start spots for the North American World Cups. US skiing officials announced months ago that selection would be based on results from the SuperTour races in Montana, and so the GRP – and pretty much every other domestic skier – set their sights on those races in the hopes of qualifying. After the dust settled, the GRP Ski Team ended up with two athletes qualifying – Patrick O’Brien and Caitlin Patterson – plus one athlete earning a spot from the National Team – Ida Sargent.

West Yellowstone Racing Report

25 Nov 2012 @22:22

Finally, after months of preparation, the GRP ski team kicked off its domestic racing season this weekend in West Yellowstone, Montana. The second of three stops on the team’s western fall ‘tour’, West Yellowstone featured two freestyle races, one each on Friday and Saturday.

Both races – distance on Friday and a sprint on Saturday – were originally intended to be SuperTours and qualifying races for American spots at the upcoming North American World Cups. But a lack of snow forced some changes to the race venue and to the races themselves. Instead of using the usual trail system in town, the races were moved to ‘the plateau’, a series of roads in the hills above town. And while the Friday distance race remained a World Cup qualifier, the Saturday sprint was switched to a prologue-only ...

West Yellowstone Update

21 Nov 2012 @18:45

Winter has proved elusive so far in West Yellowstone. The GRP made the drive south from Canmore, AB on Thursday last week and arrived to scant snow in town and thin skiing on the South Plateau above the Rendezvous Ski Trails at approximately 7,800'.

Over the week, conditions have improved on the Plateau, while the snow in town has all but disappeared. Forecasts calling for winter storms and snow accumulation have proved inaccurate, and as of now the 15/10km distance race, originally scheduled for Saturday, has been moved to a 9km point-to-point on the forest roads on the Plateau on Friday. The sprint race may be cancelled, moved, or shortened to a prologue only event.

With winter lagging behind, the team is trying to make the best of the situation by being prepared for whatever course ...

Now Accepting '13 SBTC Applications

30 Oct 2012 @18:30

The Craftsbury Small Boat Training Center is a program designed to be a bridge from collegiate rowing to the US National Team, with a focus on smaller boats. It's been fortunate to experience success throughout its short history, placing at least one boat at U23 Worlds every year since its inaugural year. Last year was no exception, as the SBTC sent Maddie Lips as the US representative for the U23 W1x. In addition to the world stage, the SBTC earned four golds at Canadian Henley this past August.

Are you or someone you know looking for a U23 opportunity next summer? We are now accepting applications for the 2013 progam. You can find out more about the SBTC at its section on our website, and when you're ready you can download an application. We'd like to receive 2013 SBTC Applications ...

12 Head of the Fish Results

30 Oct 2012 @10:21

The calm before Sandy made for great racing conditions at the Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga, NY. GRP rowers enjoyed the hospitality of the Saratoga Rowing Association, whose generosity may have been the key to success during the Saturday races, as GRP won every event they entered.

Phil Henson and Kyle Lafferty started the muggy day off right with a win in the Men’s Open 2-, finishing in 12:12. The pair was followed by Phil Grisdela and Charlie Biddle in second place with a time of 12:45. Next up was the Men’s Open 1x, with Steve Whelpley and Charlie Biddle taking the top two spots in 12:44 and 13:16, respectively. Hugh McAdam followed soonafter with a win in the Men’s Open Light 1x with a time of 12:41. In the Women’s Open 1x, GRP rowers swept the top 5 spots. Emily ...

GRP at HOCR 2012

24 Oct 2012 @13:09

Beautiful weather on the Charles this past weekend made for great racing and solid results for Green Racing Project (GRP) rowers at the 49th Head of the Charles Regatta, confirming Craftsbury as “a good place to get fast,” according to GRP Coach Dan Roock.

Craftsbury Running Program Director and honorary GRPer Lynn Jennings provided Craftsbury’s flagship performance with a victory in the Grand Masters Singles, finishing 11 seconds ahead of the runner-up with a time of 20:54, a new course record by one second. Jennings gained much of her margin during the final 750 meters of the race—have you heard of the Jennings kick? Apparently it’s a multi-disciplinary skill.

Saturday’s racing continued with a silver medal for Steve Whelpley in the Championship Singles. Starting with bow #7, ...

Craftsbury Checkpoint Challenge Recap

10 Oct 2012 @20:36

Despite rainy, cold, and generally unpleasant weather, Saturday afternoon saw five teams come out to the Outdoor Center to contest the inaugural Craftsbury Checkpoint Challenge (CCC). The CCC, which was hosted by the Craftsbury Green Racing Project skiers, incorporated elements of endurance, orienteering, adventure racing, and wit, and lived up to its tagline “test your muscles, minds, and mettle”!

In times ranging from 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes, teams of four raced around the COC campus on foot, stopping at nine different ‘checkpoints’ to attempt some sort of challenge. As promised, challenges ranged from the physical – such as rolling a tractor tire up a hill and sending it back down at targets below – to the mental – such as memorizing a list of US Presidents and ...

Henley-on-Hosmer Results

10 Oct 2012 @19:27

Over twenty racers competed in the first annual Henley on Hosmer this past weekend, enjoying both the natural beauty of Great Hosmer Pond and the rigors and traditions of Henley-style dual racing.

All the oarsmen and women competed a minimum of two times during the course of the regatta in one of four classes: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles and a Masters’ class in both events as well. In addition to the GRP Rowers that hosted the event, the regatta welcomed many notable athletes, including Tim Whitney, 2001 USA Men’s Single sculler, and Olympians Lynn Jennings, Carlie Geer, Judy Geer, and Dick Dreissigacker.

Champions of each boat class were decided through a single elimination bracket reminiscent of the progression at the Royal Henley Regatta. In contrast to its British counterpart, ...

The race was organized by GRP and US Biathlon team member Susan Dunklee, and made possible by the help of our wonderful member volunteers and staff. 2012 Roll, Run, Row Results

5 Oct 2012 @20:39

Craftsbury’s Green Racing Project held this year’s installment of the Roll-Run-Row challenge on October 3rd, bringing together competitors from the skiing and rowing squads as well as the center’s own staff. This event highlights one of the goals of the GRP:  to become the best overall athletes possible, challenging members of both squads to race in disciplines new to them. The course covered a mile-long rollerski up North Craftsbury road, followed by a two-mile run to the boathouse where the event ended with a 1.5 mile row.

The rollerski leg attacked the uphill on North Craftsbury Road. While the uphill was much more physically demanding than other course options, it limited the risk of injury to the more novice rollerskiers in the event. The ski squad had a strong start, with some ...

Conditions were almost perfect for the racing with calm water and no rain.

Strong Showing at Climb to the Castle for GRP Skiers

16 Sep 2012 @10:18

Saturday in Lake Placid, NY, the Craftsbury GRP skiers took part in an annual suffer-fest known as the Climb to the Castle. The 5-mile rollerski race up Whiteface Mountain highlights the USST (US Ski Team) training camp in Placid each year, in which the GRP is currently participating. Other skiers at the camp (and the race) this year include people from SSCV (Vail, CO), SMST2 (Stratton, VT), CXC (Hayward, WI), and a smattering of elite junior racers.

Whiteface made good on its reputation for crummy weather, greeting racers with wind, thick fog, cool temperatures, and a little rain as the race got underway at 8am. The women took off first, with USST member Liz Stephen charging off the front. Our very own Ida Sargent, Hannah Dreissigacker, and Clare Egan immediately formed a chase pack ...

Craftsbury Coach Smashes Kauai Course Record

7 Sep 2012 @14:48

Longtime Craftsbury running coach Brett Ely of Eugene, OR won the 2012 Kauai marathon on September 2. The race kicked off at 6 am and according to Ely, “The hills on the course made Craftsbury feel flat!” With her winning time of 2:46:02, Ely slashed (almost not strong enough of a verb frankly) the previous record by over 15 minutes. Brett finished fourth overall, and beat second-place finisher Devon Crosby-Helms of San Francisco, the recent San Francisco marathon champion, by over 3 minutes.

Ely said, “This was the most challenging marathon course that I have run, but the most rewarding. The community support and aloha along the course was amazing with event volunteers, as well as residents in neighborhoods cheering on the runners.”

Way to rock it in Hawaii, Brett! Congratulations!
