Masters Camps

December 10-13, 2019

The Outdoor Center is again hosting the AXCS Masters' National Championships (February 1/2, 2020), so we are aiming our early season camp specifically at race preparation. The 3-day, 4-night camp will lead directly into our season opening race weekend December 14th and 15th. The goal of this camp will be to ready masters competitors for a race weekend, with sessions tailored around pre-race physical and mental preparation.

Participants will get three days on snow (four if you get to campus early enough on Tuesday) full of instruction. Coaching staff will include former Olympian Trina Hosmer, Mansfield Nordic's Rick Costanza, Craftsbury running camp director and elite road racer Heidi Caldwell (also a former Nordic racer), and a possibly guest session from Craftsbury's Green Racing Project biathletes.

All camp participants will receive free entries into the Outdoor Center's opening race weekend, which will consist of a "knock-in" style freestyle sprint (competitors will race a qualifier and at least one sprint heat) and a 7.5k distance race (technqiue TBD). Racing is not a requirement for camp participation, but it is encouraged. Camp curriculum will be highly race-focused.

The curriculum consists of technique drills, pre-race interval sessions, video review to reinforce technical points, flexibility and yoga, plus presentations by the coaching staff on a range of topics including making a race plan, mid-season strength training, and pre-race nutrition. The weekend won't be all work though: there'll be plenty of time for relaxing with your fellow campers and staff, enjoying sumptuous meals in our Vermont Fresh Network Dining Hall (included in the full price camp), trying some biathlon, and free-skiing.
