2024 Sculling Interns

Sculling camps have started and we’re thrilled to welcome a new batch of sculling interns to Great Hosmer. The sculling internship program offers high school and college students an opportunity to help out at sculling camps while working on their own rowing skills.

Michael Kinsey - May 9-24

Michael is a third-year coed cheerleader at University of Tennessee Chattanooga studying Mechatonics Engineering with a concentration in Biomechatronics. He has been rowing for the last 7 years and coaching at Chattanooga Rowing for the past 3 years, where he started a summer competition program with his friend Grant Williams.

Jack Krueger - May 9-24

Jack (or Krueger) is a sophomore Honors Mechanical Engineering major at Texas A&M. He started rowing his freshman year of high school at Jesuit College Prep as a lightweight. His dream is to row for the Naval Academy lightweight program, currently applying to transfer. Off the water, he enjoys running, working on cars, going hunting, and anything else under the sun.

Theo Holden - May 28-June 9

Theo is a rising sophomore at the University of Michigan, studying Computer Science. He started rowing in September 2023 by joining the men’s team at the University of Michigan.

Will Turner (Hosmer Point) - June 2-7

Will is from Burlington, Vermont, and rows on UVM’s crew team. Will started rowing at Asheville Youth Rowing Association in North Carolina when he was 17, and has been in love with the sport ever since. He learned to scull at Craftsbury in the summer of 2021, and since then has competed in both sweep and sculling boats with UVM, a personal favorite of his being a double with his brother Wyatt. In his free time, Will likes to write music, cook, and go to concerts.

Wyatt Turner (Hosmer Point) - June 2-7

Wyatt is from Burlington, Vermont, where he is majoring in Neuroscience and Plant Biology. His time rowing started in 2017 in Asheville, North Carolina at the Asheville Youth Rowing Association, but he now rows for UVM. Outside of rowing, Wyatt enjoys playing bass with his brother, going on long runs and drinking tea.

Gracie Lawrence (Hosmer Point) - June 2-7

Gracie is a rising sophomore attending the University of Vermont. Originally from San Diego, Gracie now lives in South Burlington Vermont, and is rowing for the UVM Rowing Club, and is studying Political Science. After attending a “Learn to Row Camp” in the summer of 2016, she began competing for the Rowing Club of the Woodlands in Texas when she was 13, and has been sculling and sweeping since. She also worked as the director of the sculling program at Hosmer Point in the summer of 2023, returning in the summer of 2024.

Savannah Frederiksen - June 2-21

Savannah is from Dallas, TX and just completed her first year rowing for Tufts University. She's a computer science major who has been rowing for five years now. After switching from only sculling to sweeping in college, she is excited to take a break from eights and return to singles! Besides rowing, she loves to bake, run, and just chat!

Maya Turner - June 9-July 3

Maya is a senior at an IB school in California that prides itself on academics. She discovered rowing after missing out on activity related hobbies. After high school, she hopes to study Biochemistry and become a cardiovascular surgeon. In the meantime, she prides herself on staying active and learning new things!

Chloe Darcy - June 23 - July 3

Chloe has been rowing for about 5 years, beginning at Saint Ignatius College Prep in Chicago. She has attended Craftsbury as a camper for two summers, and is excited to help others learn or deepen their love for sculling! She now rows for Cornell University.

Michael Cairo - July 9-28

Michael lives in Boston, MA, where he rowed at Boston College High School before spending his first year at Northeastern University on their Oakland and London campuses. He has recently gotten into Stephen King books, is learning Italian, and enjoys latin ballroom dancing.

James Balsamo - July 9-19

James is a rising college freshman and a senior at Seton Hall Prep in New Jersey where he has rowed since freshman year. He has raced all boats from an eight to a single but fell in love with sculling during his freshman summer. After attending Craftsbury as a camper the last two summers, James is excited to join as an intern for the first time. In his free time James enjoys golfing, reading, and rowing a double with his twin brother Michael.

Michael Balsamo - July 21-28

Michael is a rising college freshman from West Caldwell, New Jersey. He began rowing his freshman year of high school for Seton Hall Prep and during his time has helped the team achieve the program’s first victories at several prestigious races, as well as being named a captain for his senior year. When not rowing, he enjoys thinking about rowing, golf, and spending time outdoors. Michael has spent the past two summers as a camper at Craftsbury, and looks forward to returning as an intern.

Julia Veal - July 28-Aug 2

Julia has rowed for 4 years and is an incoming freshman for the University at Albany in New York! She loves all things sculling and is excited to intern at Craftsbury.

Alexis Harvell - July 28-Aug 2

Alexis is from New York City. Her journey in rowing began at The Hun School of Princeton as a junior in high school, beginning six years so far of dedication to the sport. She is a senior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, pursuing a major in Economics, set to graduate in spring 2024. Alexis has also rowed and raced for two years with the ARION U23 program in Saratoga Springs.

Wesley Walker - July 28 - Aug 16

Wesley rows at Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut. He started rowing his junior summer and has loved it ever since. This is his second time at Craftsbury and his first as an intern.

Vlad Grass - Aug 4-16

Vlad is a rising freshman at Wesleyan University, where he is excited to row. Vlad rowed for the Hotchkiss School for 4 years. This will be Vlad’s third year serving as an intern at Craftsbury. In his free time Vlad enjoys hiking, swimming, and playing Magic The Gathering.

Michael Gronewold - Aug 18 - Sep 8

Michael lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he learned to row with a local program. This past spring, he rowed as a senior for his high school team. His love of activity extends beyond just rowing; he also enjoys many other activities including basketball, biking, and hiking. As a returning intern, he is looking forward to meeting all the new campers and spending more time in Craftsbury.

Aras Tobin - Aug 18-25

Aras is a rising junior from the Jackson-Reed Varsity Girls in Washington, DC. She has been rowing for two years. Off the water, she loves to hang out with her friends and spend time in the sun. Aras loves rowing and improving her skills and is excited to intern this summer.

Grace Padula - Aug 25 - Sep 13

Grace is a rising sophomore on Stanford's Light Rowing team. She is from Philadelphia, PA, and learned to row at Philadelphia City Rowing before rowing for Whitemarsh Boat Club throughout high school. She enjoyed Craftsbury's sculling camp as a high schooler and is excited to return as an intern after spending summer back on the east coast.
