Updates re: July 10 Flooding

The Jackson Bridge just east of the intersection of Route 14 and 15 washed out during the flood, but is back and open to traffic. Access to Craftsbury from the south is normalizing.

The Center’s immediate campus area has emerged relatively unscathed from over 5” of rain on Tuesday, June 10, 2023. However, the region has not been as lucky. Travel at present remains challenging at best, with myriad road closures, bridges out and washed out roads - particularly if you’re arriving from the south. We’re starting this news item as an update thread. Thanks for reading, and stay safe.

Getting Here

We’ve updated our Getting Here information to reflect the current situation. In short? Eastbound (from I-87 and Burlington) and Southbound (QC and deep NEK) travelers don’t change their drives at all. Westbound and Northbound (e.g. Boston and Maine), your drive should be amended.

More broadly, many of the roads and bridges getting here are closed and/or compromised - particularly if you’re coming from the south and Hardwick. Your best place to start for information is New England 511.

511 covers state highways, town highways are not covered under this portal, and are unlikely to be covered by Town websites given the extremely dynamic nature of this crisis. In the absence of solid information, exercise extreme caution: much of the roads that appear unharmed have been undermined to an unsafe degree.

Town of Craftsbury road closures, as of 9:00am, Wednesday, July 12.

Document Trail damage

If anyone is out and about on the trails, take pictures of the damage and send them to bikes@craftsbury.com. This allows us to both ID troublespots as well as document them for grant applications that could potentially cover repair costs.

Facilities and support for those flooded out

Center options - Water, showers, internet, power, physical help, shelter (lodging vacancies), propane and dump trucks. Here’s a simple map of where some of the self-serve items are available.

Area options (and donation options for the region) - The Genny has compiled a great list of local groups doing work that we can support either with our time or donations.

Stay safe everyone!
