A hearty thanks and congratulations to all the competitors and volunteers for the Black River Grand Prix. Though the rain actually stopped for most of the racing, conditions remained challenging. While the singletrack held up quite well to the 2.5” of rain we’ve enjoyed here since Thursday, portions of the grassy ski trail were quite soggy - “watt-sucking death march” was used in the pre-race email as a descriptor. As such, participation was down versus some other editions of the race.
Men’s 1 lap
| Place | Name | Affiliation | Category | Finish time | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tomas Masterson | Coyote Hill - Bradford, VT | Junior | 1:42:29.2 | - |
| 2 | Henry Katz | Bicycle Express Racing - Northfield, VT | Junior | 1:50:45.7 | +8:16.5 |
| 3 | Kellon Mencucci | East Hardwick, VT | U23 | 1:52:08.2 | +9:39.0 |
Tomas Masterson of Bradford, VT led the 1 lappers with a stong showing, using the tricky conditions and long course to build a substantial buffer to 2nd placed Henry Katz who was in a much tighter battle for podium spots with East Hardwick’s Kellon Mencucci.
Only one woman tackled the 1-lap race, East Burke’s Jennifer Wetherald. Wetherald broke the tape in just a shade under 2:40.

When one combines a long course with challenging conditions, gaps can grow quite quickly - and that was definitely the case today, as ~10 minutes/place was the rule on the men’s podium.
