Training week of 6/15

[Back to the Club Updates page]

EVERYONE:

  • Black River Grand Prix: is a bike race here at COC on Saturday, June 20th!

    • More info, including link to registration, here. The shortest race is 15 miles, so not really a race for most kids.

    • Volunteers are needed: sign up here if you can help.

  • Tick checks, everyone: we spend a lot of time romping around grasses and ferns and stuff. Ticks are abundant this year. Do tick checks daily!

JUNIORS:

  • Moving to summer schedule: Jr1s move to 8:30am practices on Thursday 6/18. Jr2s & U14s start in on 8:30am practices on Friday 6/19. And Sundays also bump earlier, to 8:30 instead of 9:00.

  • Sports psychology: this summer we’ll have a new resource for you! On Wednesdays, Jess Barber (local PE teacher who is also pursuing her masters in sports psych) will be on campus and available for one-on-one sessions.

  • End-of-season survey and goal-setting: if you haven’t had a one-on-one meeting with a coach yet, reach out to schedule a time. No more sign-up sheet.

  • Team training camp in August: is not going to be in Lake Placid. It’s gonna be in Bethel, ME. Preliminary trip information is here. Please read through that packet! We’re instituting some requirements this year about rollerski comfort and experience (spoiler: you must be fully comfortable on the entirety of our own rollerski loop) to help keep everyone safe on the roads.

U14s:

  • Moving to summer schedule: Weds 6/17 is a 4pm practice for you, as it has been. Then U14s start having 8:30am practices on Friday 6/19. And Sundays also bump earlier, to 8:30 instead of 9:00, in order to get done before it gets too hot in the midday sun.

BKL:

  • Tick checks: we noted this above, but tick checks are especially important for BKL since we play so many games that involve diving into the woods!

  • Bring a change of clothes + towel to summer practices. We often end up in the water if it’s hot. We don’t often take the time to change beforehand. It’s a good idea to have extra clothes.

  • Rollerskiing! Yep, we’re gonna dive right in this week. Bring your own helmet, please, and we’ll provide the rest. Practice will likely run a little late (until more like 5:15) due to the shuffle of getting everyone outfitted.

MASTERS/ADULTS:

  • Pretty standard week.

BIATHLETES:

  • First week for BKL biathlon! Normal practices this week for Jr, U14, Adults.

  • Jrs & U14s please start bring poles to practice regularly

  • Jrs may begin signing up for 1-on-1 Friday sessions on this schedule.

  • Races: Singletrack Shootout novice races are scheduled for Aug 23 & Oct 4. Preregistration required.

  • Weekly dryfire ideas (for those with rifles at home). Try for 3 -4 days per week.

    • Bunch of two minute holds. Practice shifting your focus between the front ring and the target.

    • Lift your head off/on the cheek piece a bunch of times, both eyes closed and eyes open. Make sure the sight alignment looks good (all circles concentric).

      .

Some of our U14s work on their pullups. Getting that first unassisted pullup is the hardest!
